About next year I don't know. It's definately a limited production vehicle, but how limited I'm not sure.
The 3k number is the units made for testing the waters, once they get a good idea of the demand, they'll adjust the numbers accordingly.
The car is meant to compete with the evo, as long as the evo is live and kicking and the STi is turning a profit, they'll continue selling the car, otherwise it would have made more sense to put numbered plaques in the STi and charge an extra 5k for exclusivity.

why do you say theres no rush to get an STi?
Because its most likely not going away anytime soon. Theres been a few people that bought the car in their excitement and then found out the financial burden was too great, and they had to sell theirs. Plus, there's no rush to get one because its the 1st year and there have been some issues, giving it a model year to resolve some of the more critical ones would not be a bad move.

I doubt that they'll euthanize the STi from the model line-up as long as it continues to sell well. If you remember the mid-90s when all the class-A Japanese sportscars were being discontinued, it was not due to the cars being too good, it was due to lack of sales because of grossly high price inflation. The STi and Evo are actually excellent values (when you compare them to the mid $50K JZA80 Supra SZ-R and Z32 Fairlady 300ZX Twinturbo), and as long as they both remain popular they should enjoy fairly good longevity (particularly in this new Rennaisance of Japanese sportscars). I mean come on, who wants to go back to the days when a 200hp Prelude was considered a road-demon dream car, right?

i agree
Finally we are getting the better cars that were exclusive to europe and japan. I cant see the lack of intrest from the american people. Im not sure the sale numbers on the STi to date but they are a tremendous value. Hopefully this rumor is false. There is a huge market for the finer japanese sports cars and sedans in this country and if japan turns their back on us it will be a huge loss.

I am one of those who are waiting patiently for an Sti as well. I really cannot afford this car until maybe April 2004. There are three possibilities I am taking seriously. Either..
1. There will not be an STI 2005.
2. There will be an Sti 2005 with slight improvements but not to the engine.
3. There will be an STI 2005 with an increase in 20-30 hp.
If 1 is true, I am getting an Sti 2004.
If 2 is true, I am getting an Sti 2004.
If 3 is true, I am getting the 2005.
