My Geo Metro is acting up

My fiancee's 98 Geo Metro LSi has an issue with the AC/Heat fan inside the cabin.

The AC and Heating in the car seem to be in decent working order seeing how there's 85000 miles on the car and i don't have any documentation or knowlege of a AC recharge (car used to be her parents)

Anyway, there's 4 fan speed settings on the fan and 1-3 don't work anymore. they went one by one... first the #1 fan setting, then 2 and shortly after the #3 setting. So all she has is the number 4 setting which isn't too practical in Ca weather unless it's 100degress in the summer.

Anyone know what i should check? what fuse or whatever that may be blown? i just want to get an idea of what to look for before i go ripping it apart.

thanks, eric:)

Dude, just crumple it up, recycle it and buy another one. They are disposable!

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. I don't know why you would post such a question on THIS message board... you are just leaving yourself open for punishment :D I have to give you props, however... I've never heard of a Geo making it to 85k, your wife must take excellent care of it.

The fan speed problem also happened with my BMW 325i back in the day. It is the switch itself which is worn out, not any fuses. Just replace the switch (the contact solenoids have worn out.)

Oops, now I feel bad for giving you heck!

Seriously though, replace the switch. If it is a sliding switch or a rotary switch, the "brushes" that make contact in the switch have worn away. A simple and cheap fix.

If it was an actual fuse or electrical problem, it wouldn't work at all...
