HELP!! Blown engine :(

Hey Everyone,

My brother has a 1999 Subaru Impreza TS. Last night the engine blew b/c of lack of oil (last oil change was at 12,000km ago). Yaya, he takes good care of his car :p The oil light was flickering on and off, and of course my brother ignored it, last night the engine starting knocking... anywho, Subaru in north Vancouver wants to charge him $2,700 for a used engine with approx $27,000 km (rear ended) and is 170 compression across the board. All together however with installation, the cost will be just over $4000.

Wow. That is a lot of money. So I need to know if there are alternatives for him to consider. Another thing is he wants/needs the car ASAP for business (or else he'll be wanting to drive my baby ) so time is definitely a factor. And no, he does not want to upgrade the engine, he is not a car person.

Oh yeah, the dealership was talking about this being a problem with his engine. Using lots of oil. Anyone know more about that, for I would think it's bad that his last oil change was 12,000km, not not bad enough to have no oil left in the car. Or is it?

Any help is appreciated, he unfortunately needs to decide be the end of the night.

Thanks!

-Christina

Your brother is retarted.
Beyond that, he should change the oil every 6000km, but that shouldn't be cause to blow the engine. Was he burning a lot of oil? Any headgasket problems? Overheating? Sucks, but he could get an engine swap for about 2/3rd the price from a private garage.

agreed!!!!

it's non sense that not to change engine oil for 12000 km
any engine would die if a person treated his car like that

sometime ppl got into an accident because they made a small mistake...well, get it fixed and tell ur brother not to do the same mistake...service the car every 6000km :)
