All GTI's are just a trim level of GOLF. But in America, they tend to advertise it only as "GTI" so that those snobs that care so much about labels can feel nice they don't have a lowly GOLF. But the R32 is just designated as "R32".

Sorta like the WRX and STI label. Some people think they are only "WRX"s or "STI"s when they are all just Imprezas.
