No commercial insurance because you dont need it. Just the personal car insurance. If you are interested in driving for lyft and uber, message me.

Uuummmmm Where did you hear that? I would strong suggest you read your personal car insurance fine print. Because my current (and prior) personal policies explicitly do not cover anything related to car sharing or commercial transportation activities.

I was also told that my personal insurance can be revoked at any time if insurance company finds out I am using it for commercial/taxi/ride sharing services...because those are not activities of personal nature and carry much higher potential liability.

That is why I am curious about commercial insurance...

Good news for drivers here, even if it's just one employee so far; employees (vs contractors) have a lot more protections. Hope it applies to both Uber and beyond (uber Uber as it were).

The key word is "if" they find out. The thing is how would insurance company know if you are using your car for ride sharing? In case of accident, you can tell them that you were with a friend and they wouldnt know. You need to communicate with the passenger and tell them the situation. If they are not onboard then you're just out of luck.

On the side note, uber and lyft have insurance that covers you when you are on duty.

The term "ride sharing" is a vague term. If my friend ask me to drop him off at the airport and he"ll pay me or gas money, would you consider that as ride sharing since you are getting paid or just a good friend doing good thing to a friend?

That's the answer to the question.

insurance fraud: an overview

Insurance fraud refers to any duplicitous act performed with the intent to obtain an improper payment from an insurer. The pervasiveness of insurance fraud drives up costs for all consumers and costs the insurance industry billions of dollars each year. One authority estimates that the annual value of insurance fraud approaches $80 billion. Detecting insurance fraud is difficult because of the surreptitious nature by which the criminal perpetrates the fraud.

For the record, Uber's insurance only cover's liability (if you hurt/damage someone else) it does not cover damages to your own vehicle

Is this your own opinion or Uber's actual stance on the situation? I guess I should also suggest you look up the term fraud and perjury.

Also, have you read the fine print of Uber's insurance? What do they define as "on duty"?

No, it is not. But whatever makes you sleep at night. The best advice I ever received regarding presumptive straw logic statements is to always think about how they would sound in front of a judge in a court room of law under oath.

Last time I read Uber's insurance fine print, their insurance is only active from the period driver picking up a passenger to dropped them off. They are on their own all other times when the app is on and driver is hunting around. Their insurance is also limited as Lowend pointed out. I do not remember insurance being comprehensive.

Regardless, most personal insurers define that period as a commercial activity of acting as a taxi. That will either result in a denied claim or cancelled policy after a payout. That's why I asked about commercial coverage.

I have nothing against ride sharing companies...when it is done correctly...
