Actually..... the 05-09 LGT 5 Speed gears are what they are using in the 08+ WRX 5 speeds, but I think the latter receives a different first? The Fozzy 5 speed he has the 04-05 is probably the same as 06-07 WRX. The LGT uses a similar case with beefier gears. It's definitely stronger. Max I say 350whp at the most. But there's plenty of LGT guys running a VF series on e85 with no tranny issues. Check out legacygt.com

While LGT gears fit in his tranny I do not think 08+ wrx gears do unless its a 06-07 casing? PM SlugRX he had his done by FW 08+ gears in his blobeye.

The one thing I don't see in this thread is the purpose of the transmission. Is it for daily/regular driving? Why is it being repaired/replaced?
You can go get a replacement working trans from an importer for $500-1000 and just stick it in the car and go. Maybe even sell the original one and make some money back.

Maybe a hta68 or similar with topmount running on 91 and a e85 map as well. Honestly I havent looked into it too much because I have tranny issues to deal with first.
Didnt really think about an importer. Been looking around to find someone selling a low mileage FXT tranny but they seem to be rare atleast on the forums. Even the rear ends go quick.
EDIT: Totally forgot about the reason part of your question. Tranny was whining for a long time and not just a small whine, it was loud as **** and last time I drove it on the freeway, it felt like the rear end was trying to catch up with the car. Thats the only way I can explain what was going on. Car still drives but at 180k (i think or was it 170k), I think a rebuild is in due anyway. Need to get it up on the rack and pulled off and opened up to determine the real cause but Id rather go in fully prepared.

Its for daily driving. Its got a vf39 and supporting mods currently and I dont ever see myself putting anything over a 20g on it due to my driving style. I like my boost powerband as low as possible and I'll forever stick with a top mount.

Yeah... then I'd say a stock replacement would be fine. If you don't have any particular WANT for 6 speed or need for it then you could definitely go stock to save a buck.
But if you're thinking upgrade I personally think having Paul at FW build you a trans with LGT gears is a solid way to go. That's the direction I'll go when mine lets go after I do my motor. LOL!

Finally found what I was looking for
FAQ: Comparison of Subaru Gear Sets, WRX, Legacy GT, STI RA, and more...
check that out, you can see the gear thickness. There's gotta be a thread somewhere with FXT gear thickness.

Any option is going to cost you a pretty penny. But If you know you're going to mod your car I'd go with the 6spd route. LGT gears and 08+ gears are strong but will break easier than a 6spd...so why spend the money twice when you can spend it one time and not worry about it? And plus a fozzy with a 6spd is just awesome!

However your page does reinforce what I said about older LGT gears being roughly the equivalent of V6 non-RAs.
