Transmission rebuild questions
I know some of you guys with wrx's had newer gears installed. Anyone know if you can use LGT gears (im hearing they're the strongest) will work in a FXT? Also who sells them outside of the dealer. Trying to keep the costs down.
Ive considered going the 6 speed route time and time again but to be honest the cost, labor and having to sell/trade wheels is turning me off especially since I wont be dragging/launching or having anything more than 400hp.

Get the LGT 1-4 and use your stock 5th.
There is a dude selling a complete 6spd set up with everything needed to go in to a forester. If you need a trans and you're even thinking about it... I'd go that route.

would those be the gearsets id be looking at replacing them with? i cant seem to find any genuine subaru parts price. ill try calling dealership later to compare.
unlikely but again depends on the price difference
I'll call him and find out. More than likely though this is gonna be a project my dad and I will be trying our hand at. We've put together a few trannies before but never a Subaru.

That's a downgrade from what you have. It's actually what I have in my car right now. I would never expect them to hold 400 wtq reliably.

If you have to do the work anyways, you might as well upgrade. Easier upgrade is to have your stock trans beefed up but that still leaves a lot to be desired for some folks.

How much do you think a transmission rebuild is going to cost or a stock replacement?

that link posted is missing a few things, not a complete swap. you also need wheels, brakes, and suspension (if not 04 hubs), and many other bits. that's dramatically more than finding/building a 5 speed to bolt back in.
but i also wouldn't but "$10k" into a vehicle worth half that. you can find way better options.

a rebuild/replacement is way cheaper than 6 speed.

Rebuilding a trans is going to run you about $1800. Toss in upgraded gears and you'll hit $3k plus really quick.
That 6 spd and I've seen many others as well in that $28-4000 range that are complete or close to isn't really all that much more in the scope of things and it's a great upgraded.
that particular link came out of a forester and has some of the parts that you'll need for a forester specific application. You'll also probably want to do a clutch/flywheel but you'd do that with the other application as well.
So... he's talking upgrades so call it a $1-1800 difference.
It's a MASSIVE upgrade and if you're in there anyways and can do it... why not.
Saying you wouldn't do something is pointless. I wouldn't put a 450whp motor in my car but that doesn't mean it's stupid for someone else to do it.
My car is at the end of it's life... so my choice is probably much like the OP's. Build it the way I want it... or sell it and get something else.
The OP likes the forester and if he plans on driving it for a while then putting $3-9k into it depending on what we're talking about here may or may not be a good decision for him. But not really what he was asking about...

The one thing I don't see in this thread is the purpose of the transmission. Is it for daily/regular driving? Why is it being repaired/replaced?
You can go get a replacement working trans from an importer for $500-1000 and just stick it in the car and go. Maybe even sell the original one and make some money back.
