Are there any Vodka distilleries in the bay area? (Possible field trip?)

Hey all,

I'm wondering if there are any vodka distilleries that you can visit/tour in the bay area?

I know most people go to wineries, but since wine isn't my thing and I'd prefer vodka I thought it would be cool to take my wife to one as "an educational field trip". ;)

Speaking of which, what Vodka do you guys prefer?

I know there are really high end vodkas like gray goose and belvedere, as as great as they may be, I still prefer the higher end Kettle One vodka... Tastes better then Gray Goose and its half the price. High end vodka is kind of an oxy moron... Vodka is supposed to be inexpensive and good tasting... That expensive stuff is all just a gimmick to get you to pay more.

With vodka there is:

1. Low end plastic bottle CRAP, like low end smirnoff (higher end smornoff is ok)

2. Middle grade/priced vodka like kettle one and high end smirnoff (which in my opinion is the way to go)

3. High end vodka like Gray goose and Belvedere which taste almost identical to kettle one but are priced more then double which makes people think that the vodka is better which it isn't.

Cliff notes: Looking for a homebrew type vodka distillery in the bay area. Anyone want to do a field trip? I'm totally down to do a subie vodka distillery meet if you guys are down. People over 21 of course and I'd make sure people are responsible enough to go. ;)

I find the higher end is smoother to me. Seeing that i am Finnish and my whole family used to drink vodka like water lol they will drink any of it.

Hangar 1 vodka is out of Alameda, on the grounds of the old naval air station, I believe (or used to be anyway)....Excellent stuff.

When I was in Moscow there was some Vodka there that all the hardcore locals drank that was distilled from wood and apparently cheaper than water, I had 1/2 of one shot and it was the worst drink I have ever drank ever. It was what I would assume drinking rubbing alcohol is like.

Yeah, thats usually the case, but if you want smooth just try Kettle One, much smoother than Gray Goose in my opinion.

My wife HATES hard alcohol and she can tolerate Kettle One, she can't even look at Smirnoff without wanting to puke. (talking about the non-flavored basic smirnoff).

Damn, I spelled "ketle" wrong, it only has one "t" in it.

The smirnoff I have is so rough that I can clean gunshot wounds with it... I have to freeze it in order to be able to drink it at all. I know they make higher end smirnoff stuff which is decent but I still prefer Ketel one.

charcoal filtered vodka

If husband and i drink vodka we will usually drink ketel one or gray goose. I also find drinking the "top" shelf alcohols i get less of a headache later.
