Tahoe driving conditions

noob question.I'm planning on driving up to the sierra this sunday in the sti, I have bridgestone Potenza RE970AS tires on. Do you think i'll be fine without chains or should i bring them just incase it really storms out there.

weaver 03-16-2012 04:11 PM

It's not suppose to storm sunday... I think... but it wouldn't hurt to bring chains up there

stupidchicken03 03-16-2012 04:11 PM

Are you going Highway 80 or 50?

Solo_rider 03-16-2012 04:18 PM

hwy 50, planning to go to Sierra

Its a big fine If caught not having chains In your car, Why risk It? If you don't end up using them then big deal.

The worst will be tonight and tomorrow, Sunday should be a lot nicer.

I'm praying my truck makes It tonight lol

I live in Tahoe and have never owned chains for my WRX or Jeep. Never got stop and even asked before. California is pretty good about keeping there roads clear (except my street) I wouldn't worry about it.
I wouldn't go up thinking its not going to be snowing though...

Yeah you're right, i think i'll be picking up some chains/cables tonight. Not worth the risk of getting turn back down the mountain. Good luck driving up tonight, the news says its gonna be a nasty severe snow storm tonight and tomorrow. BTW which resort you going to?

Solo_rider 03-16-2012 04:35 PM

Thanks for everyone response. I think i'll go pick some chains up just incase.

Ya, but I'm going to assume you have snow tires on these cars as well...

stupidchicken03 03-16-2012 04:36 PM

we have a cabin in Truckee and ive been going all my life. Ive never once put chains on my car or have ever been asked if i have any.

And ive driven in some pretty sketch conditions in the winter..

you drive on all season tires or snow tires?

Throwdown 03-16-2012 04:43 PM

I drive on all season toyo proxes 4. Lost traction a few times in snowstorms. Good for light snow, but otherwise it can get sketch.

This was one of the worse times driving up.

They actually closed the entire freeway down for over an hour and we were stuck in Colfax. After they opened it back up, we went on and within 15min they shut it down again. I was the only car on the road, everything else were SUVs and trucks. I was passing all of them going 20mph lol. The 1.5hr trip to our cabin turned into a 4hr trip..

The 3 lane highway became 1 lane and visibility was about as far as you can see in the pic (the car in front of me was about 3 car lengths in front)
Wind blowing snow across the road so it was a total white out.

The new law is a $400 fine for not carrying chain/cables. I've been stopped by Caltrans on 88 before as they didn't know what the car was, back in '03. But there is always a chance. You will probably never have to use them, but it might be worth having some in case of the potential fine.
