Subaru needs to step up...
...to combat this:

I think the first thing Subaru needs to do is build a better motor (internally). The Sti will probably go to the new FA series motor but for god sakes put some forged Pistons/Connecting rods in the engine. For me the 305hp rating the Sti is less of an issue than the cast pieces used in a so called performance motor, the reason the HP in the Sti isn't increasing is that the engine cannot handle the extra ponies.

The STI needs more than forged pistons to compete. It also needs better gas mileage - some of the new 2 Liter turbo's (some are even pushing more power) have much better gas mileage. |

The AWD is the big culprit here honestly. |
If that Golf R hits the states it will be like $42,000 base price probably.
The current Golf R isn't even that great for the money. You can't even turn traction control off all the way until you flash the ECU. |
I guarantee we wont get this car.

eh after seeing the suspension upgrade they did to the STi, im not too worried about power

That 2L on the CLA45 AMG has 360HP, it's also AWD and it gets 23 CITY and 31 Highway. Subaru has to aim higher - my GR only gets around 20 miles per gallon - the engine sucks and they need to do better (reliability, mileage and power). The M235i has a 6 cylinder inline-6 turbo making 320 WHP and it gets 32 MPG highway. Why are these engines so much more efficient than the current subaru 4 cylinder engines? |
uh...its STILL a VW, that means at 60k, the electrical will go haywire and it will **** out the axles.

I'm talking about reliability / performance / gas mileage.. The industry has improved in all three during the last 10 years.. |
How do you think the CLA45 will do on that 2L pushing 27psi of boost? I just dont see it being very reliable in the long run. |
subaru does need to step it up. Lets speak hypothetically and say they do make a "better" sti….350hp motor, with better pistons, standard BBS wheels, nicer seats (hell even mustangs are getting recaros) better interior, better aero/looks….etc. that will be probably a 40-50k dollar car, maybe not worth it

I feel the boxer configuration has something to contribute too. |
Why are these engines so much more efficient than the current subaru 4 cylinder engines?
By its very design a boxer engine is not very fuel efficient. Even the air cooled VW 1200cc could only get 22-25mpg real life. It comes down to this: Power, MPG, and Reliability you only get to pick TWO of them. |
