Was sold the wrong Part at Capitol Subaru, opinions!
 

So i had purchased a bearing for the front driver side of my sti at Capitol Subaru. The guy ended up giving me the bearing for the left side. Once installed from the machine shop, i noticed that the spindle had A LOT of play, moving, clunking. Now the hub is messed up. The dealer replaced the bearing for the correct one today at no charge after identifying that they did indeed sell me the wrong part, but now i have a bad hub to worry about. Should the dealer be responsible for the hub as well? all they offered was 20% off. The employees were straight forward and didn't try to BS me. Opinions....

how much damage in monetary value did the mistake cost u?

I just say that because dealers parts dept tend to crap on people without thought. Awhile back I saved for some sti parts, sealed boxes from subaru. It turned out one of the items was missing an entire side or half the parts, but because i waited 30 days to return they said too bad.

I used to work at an Auto(kragen)zoneo'reily corporate shop and sold commercial and regular retail sales - if a part went out that was incorrect, it was up to the buyer/installer to do a pre-flight check on the part number before installation

sucks that it happens, but this is the rule at many (if not all) parts shops. sorry to hear, but good of them to offer a discount; I don't think they are liable for installation of the wrong part

(think square peg, round hole - just because they sold you the wrong peg doesn't mean they're liable for the buyer trying to smash it in to fit...)

Shame on the dealership for selling the wrong part, shame on the buyer for not checking for the correct part number.

We get atleast a few wrong parts from vendors every week if not daily. Its up to us to check them before installing them. We've had to eat up costs before too. Chalk it up to experience.

Experience usually isn't cheap. Since they didn't try to BS you, I'd say I'd take the 20% on the hub.

Left and right bearing are the same part number for the 04 STi, from Subaru. $100 a piece.

Was just about to say, thought they were the same part number..sounds like an incorrect install or your old bearing "messed" your hub up, causing the new one to feel as if it was the wrong part.

Id take the 20% the dealer offered you =)

From my understanding they are 2 different parts. Why else would they take the blame for it, dealerships ain't that nice. Plus I've read early 04 sti have a different bearing than later 04 sti

28316AE000 part number L and R front wheel bearings, just checked with my parts guy..

Maybe the part they gave you once had a L and R..but most of the time the superceede to one number..

oh well, if they took blame of the wrong part, didnt install it and are still giving you a discount id take it =)..

Ask Unit91. He should be able to tell you for sure.

The Subaru repair manual warns against reusing the bearing if the hub is taken off the car. You might need a new bearing also. Just FYI.
