So my RH Foglight took a hit.......
2002 WRX
Dealer wants $179 and has to special order. Is there an affordable upgrade that "bolts on." And can the aftermarket lights run behind stone shields? |
I put PIAA 580s on mine, very nice but the covers barely fit , and I don't expect the STI covers would accomodate them either, but at least when these break you can buy a $35 lens and $8 bulb.
I busted the left one, so I do have a right one I could give you, it might not be a perfect match, I think they used 3 different fog lights over the first year of production. I'm leaving for RIM tonight though.... (I just set up the wireless network at home, man this is cool!) |
Where did you pick up the PIAAs?
And are they a fog, or a driving light? |

they're pretty cheap. got my supertones from them hella 500's are pretty good from what i read http://www.rallylights.com/hella/500.asp |
I got mine through Griffin in Berkeley.
My kit was a pair of fog lamps, with mounting brackets for the Impreza, but they make driving and spots in that model too. http://www.piaa.com/Lamps/Lamp-pages/580.html I think the kit I had was called a 5803, but those now seem to be based on the 540 model driving lights (.....?) You can call PIAA directly, they're in Oregon |
Looks like I can get Hella 500's and the brackets for less than the stock, dim foglights.
But the question is: do I want fog or driving? Driving would be nice for night runs on Mines etc, but fog may be more practical. ?? |
get both, wire the driving lights off the high beams and the fogs off the low beams, then you're ready for anything!

Wow, I can actually get the 500's here @ work. My concern is if the brackets that are available from the aftermarket for these are durable and REALLY fit. And that the harness will work with all the OE stuff, no B.S.
Griffin's looking into a kit that will mount and work like OE too. How have the aftermarket brackets worked so far for you guys? |
i think kartboy sells brackets for the hella 500's.

much how are they going for? $$$

I think fog, instead of driving, probably make more sense. In poor weather, the driving lights may be more of a hindrance than an aid. I ran Hella 160's with 55W bulb (driving) on my VW Bug for many years, those worked nicely when out screaming in the country @ night. But they could be deadly with oncoming traffic, and were pretty useless in the drizzle/rain/fog. Since back-country driving @ night makes up such a small percentage of my actual driving, I think fogs are the way to go for now. Clear Hella 500's look like the answer.

Yep, I plan on it. My plan is to keep the setup as orig as possible (kind of my plan with any mods), so if I want to ever want to go back stock. Thanks- Jim |
