So, I want to build a website....

but I don't know how.

My parents have a Korean Restaurant, and I want to set up a web site for it. They've owned the restaurant for about 30years, so I figure it's time for them to get some online presence.

So, I think the first step is to register a domain name, right? I was thinking GoDaddy - any reason I should look elsewhere? Any suggestions?

Then, I would probably need to use some kind of program (Frontpage? Is this even still around?) to actually build the website, right? I don't need anything too fancy - maybe just a basic page with a plain background color, some links to menus (in .pdf format), and maybe a photo gallery, contact info, and that's about it. I suppose I could always just hire someone to do it, but I figure I should at least know something about the process.

So, any suggestions as to programs, tutorials, etc? The last web page I designed was back in '97, was dedicated entirely to my GS-R, and was on hosted on GeoCities. Yea, that long ago.

It's called Korean Secret Garden, or Bi Won. It's in Santa Clara, on El Camino Real, amongst the 100 other Korean restaurants.

We've gotten pretty good reviews on Yelp, but I figure having a website would only add to the online presence.

Oh, and thanks for the offer to rep.

i used hostito.com for awhile.
you can purchase the domain, webspace, etc.
they even have templates if you want to use them.

i'm an amateur when it comes to web designing...i found it easiest to just use photoshop and chop em up into pieces

pay someone to build it and get up and running, then play around with the code on your own machine if you want to tweak things around. If you're just doing something basic like contact info and menu it shouldnt cost more than $200 at most.

first find sites that you like and decide what elements you want in you own site, then search for "website design" -> http://sfbay.craigslist.org/cps

GOOD design and a simple page should not cost $200, it should be $1000 at least and up.

A GOOD web designer without a hook up will charge $100-$150 per hour. The amount they can get done in 2 hours will be not very much.

Im not saying it cant be done for $200, because it can, but I hate when people say this and then either rape the web designer by changing the scope and bickering about price or they get shocked by how crappy their $200 web page (single page) looks.

Just like anything, you have to pay for talented people to do good work, unless you know them and its a favor.

OMG, i love Secret Garden.

i use namecheap.com for domain reg and depending on what you want to do i host my sites on cloud based servers which is overkill for what you need. i can recommend a cheaper solution as well for maybe 75/yr.

Isn't Wordpress a blog site? Can you make a regular website using this as well and have a regular domain name?

Cool - $75/hr seems reasonable. How many hours do you think it'd take to get something basic up there?

wordpress is basically a content management system. you can build pretty much anything on top of it. gq is talking about a self-hosted wordpress (yeah, you can have your own domain name).

i actually meant 75/year for good hosting. there are cheaper options to be had. i can probably get a site up for you as well at a good rate. i'll PM you and we can hammer out details.

I use bluehost.com. Very good 24 hr customer service. You can ask them with anything your stuck with. I also suggest using wordpress. Get the domain name, create your FTP account and SQL database (they should have tuts on this on the hosting website, or you can just google it) download filezilla, or any other ftp client and upload the wordpress documents into it. Then just purchase a wordpress template for like 40 bucks and done.
