Snow trip - tires question
Snow trip - tires question
Here is my situation, I have a WRX wagon and a Honda Odyssey. Odyssey just got new tires yesterday. I have chains for Odyssey too.
My WRX has summer tires, I would need to either buy set of WRX stockers with all season on them. I am going to sell the WRX so I don't want to sink too much money into it.
I also will have my family with me so wife and two kids with all the gear and clothes for a few days. So space is also important. I can fit all the stuff into the WRX but space will be a concern.
What would you do considering that next weekend, it looks like snow for the whole time we are up there?
Odyssey - brand new tires w/ chains and tons of space.
WRX- have to buy wheels and all season tires and limited on space

If you don't have the money for some snow tires, or at least "M+S" rated tires on the WRX...Go with the Honda and chains. Be prepared to put them on. Which means do a few practice runs at home, make sure you get them on correct & they stay on during a drive around the block.

In the long-term, looks like a Tribeca might be a viable option, since you can probably do OK with M+S tires on a Subaru, and still have some space left (certainly more than a WRX).
tl;dr ignore my post

The new tires on the Odyssey are M+S and based on the reviews perform well in the snow.
The Tribeca is on the list of vehicles that we will get but it's just not going to happen before the next few weeks.

Renting is option but just doesn't make financial sense.
My wife and I have been waiting for 8 years for this. Our kids are 8 and 5, in the last 8 years we've been up like 2 days. This year we've done 6 already. The 5 year old is on skis and 8 is on a board. Both are riding down the greens all day. My 8 year old even went in the park with me the last time we went up.
Before the kids, we got about 20 days in every year. We want to get through the current season with the cars we have then get something new now that we know both kids love the snow.

Yeah in that case take the mini van. I only brought up renting a vehicle because I'd be too lazy to deal with chains
and buying wheels/tires for a car you're selling is a bit self defeating.
