Two years ago I couldn't find any stores in Bay Area that had SA helmets in stock except these guys: Sparco, OMP, Puma, Aria, Bell, HJC, Hans, Alpinestars - Wine Country Motor Sports

Had to go there to try a few SA helmets. Great place.

There is also a guy (from Campbell, CA IIRC) who was selling SA helmets from a trailer (along with lots of other stuff) at GGCBMWCCA AutoX at Great America a year ago but I've forgot his name. I remember he had Pyrotecs and etc but not HJC...

"SA" is actually Special Application under Snell ratings. These helmets are different from the "M" or motorcycle rating in that they are designed for auto racing and provide extreme impact resistance and higher fire protection. There is also a "K" rating for karting.

It's still Snell which should only be used when there are high impact ratings occurring. Snell approved helmets actually can cause more damage to your head at lower speeds than lets say a DOT only helmet. Snell's standards are a bit higher and they test impacts at the same speed on the same spot of a helmet which doesn't ever happen in real life situations. But obviously these events require these helmets.
