proposed new smog check

From today's mercury news:

"Under the measure, any California motorist with a 1996 or newer vehicle would no longer be required to pass a tailpipe emissions test or a treadmill test. Instead, every two years when the vehicle is due for a smog inspection, a technician would hook up a meter to a port under the dashboard and download data from the vehicle's computerized onboard diagnostic system.

Such computerized systems have been required by the federal government for all new cars since 1996; they use dashboard lights to alert drivers to a wide range of problems. They also record data that show whether a car's pollution-control systems are working properly."

Does this mean if you have a cobb disable your CEL's, then you're good to go?

While it may sound like good news, be on the lookout for more of those roadside smog check thingies. I have a feeling this news may not go without some sort of stipulation added to it.

KrAzYkld 02-24-2010 05:26 PM

holy crap. i would like to know what they will be checking for.

TurnWRX 02-24-2010 05:28 PM

forgot to add, the smog check stations must be having a fit over this proposed legislation, since a lot of them had to buy those dyno roller thingies.

this is not good at all, if you have something that over rides the smog system the car's computer will pick up on it and you will not be able to pass smog

woocabin 02-24-2010 06:58 PM

NV has this as their smog check. No tail pipe, no visual, just CELs and no billowing smoke.
