I grew up skiing in Whistler every weekend... best place in North America hands down.

But since I now live in SF, here are my top 3 Tahoe favorites:
Kirkwood (have a seasons pass... lots of good steeps and backcountry)
Squaw... good, but so expensive. Lots of steeps and cliffs!
Sugarbowl

if you don't want to deal with crowds, stay away from flatstar, i mean northstar.
If you don't want to deal with lines, pick a different weekend. Seriously, MLK weekend is probably one of the worst possible times to go anywhere near Lake Tahoe.

As an aside, I went to Park City and the Canyons a few years ago. The Canyons was absolutely fantastic! I had a couple great days there.

everytime, holiday or not, I have been to flatstar it is crowded. you waste so much time. and talk about dodging the beginners when you have to go to the lodge.

I am convince the reason being is that it is last resort til reno.

if you are going to tahoe, i'd say:
for north shore: alpine or squaw
for south shore: kirkwood or heavenly
