Could be the starter not disengaging from the flywheel.

Mine did that the other day when it was SUPER cold the night before and my car had sat for a couple days.

Yes. When it started it was barely noticeable, but it got louder each time.

 

I had something similar happen to me. Turned the key, got the "you moron, it's already running" sound and then saw my tachometer still read 0 rpm. Usually that sound is because the flywheel is already moving the starter cant engage and rubs against it to make that sound. This time I think it might have been the starter not engaging the stopped flywheel and scraping against it instead.

Took a second to look around and then cranked it again and it started up like normal.

 

This does not bode well for me.

 

This happened to me also the other day. Same situation too, cold morning and hadn't driven in 2 days. I was worried.

My STi and my wife's Honda are both screeching on cold starts. Sounds like trying to start the car when it's already running.

 

By screeching are you guys talking about the worn belt screech sound?

 

No, not like a belt, it's just like turning the key when it's already running. And it takes a few cranks (on the Honda).
