Martial Arts for kids

I know there are at least a few of you here who are into various forms of martial arts. I'm not, so I'm asking for a little advice to point me in the right direction.

I'm looking into getting my son into some sort of program. He went from BMX Champion to scrawny video game addict. He's small as it is, but playing video games isn't helping. He's about 4'6" and 70 pounds soaking wet.

I'm looking for something to help instill a sense of discipline and fitness and since he's small for his age having some tools to defend himself wouldn't hurt either.

We're in Watsonville, so would want to look for a place fairly nearby, no further than Santa Cruz. Any suggestions?

yea those mma classes are great excercise for adults but i dont suggest it for your kid. it teaches him violence and lil ones always want to show off their fighting skills. mma classes dont teach much discipline. thats more of asian traditional martial arts like tae kwon doe.

i would suggest brazilian-jiu-jitsu. and just that. no mma. i train under Ralph Gracie and i think his cousin has an academy in Santa Cruz. tkd, karate and all those are good but not as useful as bjj.

Goodluck.

wocabin brings up a good point, though like dirty lyrics and sexual explicitness, it's the parents themselves, in the end, that is tasked with duty of teaching kids right from wrong. Though I will say the "bad" mma guys with the excessive bro-ness are the worse of the worse. like west coast's version of guidos, except with roid rage
