Im no sword expert(but I do watch a lot of movies ,haha)but I thought that when you block an attack you are supposed to use the back of the sword so you dont dull the cutting edge, then flip it around when you are ready to attack(cut) your opponent?

Technically in Japanese swordsmanship, you use side of the blade to execute waza (techniques) for a counterattack. never do you use the back. if you execute it properly, you only get contact on the side of the blade and not the cutting edge.
