It's illegal to make your own alcohol UNLESS registered with BATFE.

Here's the basics on distillation

Making cider is not illegal! I loves me a cider on ice after a hot day at work.

There's a guy in SJ that made a E85 brewing unit, he did it for fun as he said he couldn't make the unit cost cheap enough to market as it's illegal to use in homes but he used raw cane sugar and the cost with electricity per 55 gallon drum was 0.99c pe gallon and it would make a batch overnight running off a standard washer dryer outlet!

If I'm not mistaken it is legal to distill alcohol which is not "fit for human consumption"
ie Ethanol WILL kill you in short order if you drink it.

That said, home stills are basically bombs waiting to go off. I know professional distillers and all have had close calls with home stills

its like a small aquarium... any small change has a huge impact because the environment is so small. except its an aquarium that can explode.

There is no pressure build up. the vapor gets pushed right out. Then a cooling jacket condenses it back to a liquid.

Sort of. More my boys. He welded it up. We did a "brain" on it that you can set what temp you want and it calculates the rate of temp rise and actuates a little solenoid for hi and low flame. Holds is within 2 degrees of set temp.

So that's +/-2 degrees? Or +/-1 degree.
