Cel p2441
My CEL and cruise control light started flashing the other day and it turns out it is a code P2441 (Secondary Air Pump Valve stuck closed). My car is a 2006 Subaru WRX with 50k. It's not covered under warranty and it looks like the repair might be pricey. The CEL was reset, but the next day it came up again.
I believe my options are to get an AP and have it tuned, get the repair, or just run it with the CEL. Any ideas or recommendations would be appreciated. I do not have a lot of extra cash right now, but can probably scrap up a few dollars. I plan to try and get a hold of Subaru, but doubt they will do anything since I am out of warranty.

the dealer wont warranty it, it doesnt fall under SOA guidelines (trust me I have fought with them a lot on this one, its BS). we have sent easily half a dozen people in for it and they refuse...which is BS, b/c its a smog related component and should be under the smog law = 100k miles.
in order to fix that issue you need to replace both valves, etc...the job runs approx $1,400-$1,500 to do.
we see this pretty often now (at typically the 5-6 year mark and around 60k miles).
you could do block off plates and tune (but if you dont own engine management, its going to cost more to do those plates and tuning + Cobb AP, then replacing the valves).
the thing that sucks is the issue will most likely return in the future if you replace the valves, as they are physically getting rusted shut.
My $0.02

they will NOT cover it (or at least none have over in our area with our customers). we send every customer in for it and they refuse; they say its not under warranty and that's that.
I tried to argue its a smog related component and should be under the 100k smog warranty (like cats and exhaust systems are) but they say no. this has been on literally half a dozen occasions.
we see issues with these valves from folks who live near the ocean or high moisture area's. My guess is they are getting condensation/moisture and rusting closed.
Sucks but they need to be replaced in order to pass smog and keep the car smog legal.

Those solenoids are awful. They go out and if they stick open, they have the potential of causing some serious damage to the heads and/or valvetrain. We usualkly recommend deleting the air pump using block-off plates and tuning the car to go along with them. We offer tuning without the Cobb AP which would save you quite a bit of money. We also have the block-off plates in stock. Give us a call if you have any questions.
Thanks

so if these valves are getting stuck does it apply to the newer models to? if so whats the point of these things if theyre bound to fail when they were put in for emissions to begin with?

they dont all fail, they fail on certain vehicles...its not like a epidemic and its doing it on ALL of them, as notated before, we see a correlation between people who live in high moisture area's and these rusting shut.
*also note, the block off plates ARE NOT smog legal (for those that care, which = most people we deal with at LIC)

Ed can confirm this (as he was the one I was talking with about those when I was up at EQ Tuning), but the Air Pumps are on the newer models, the older models had the catted up-pipe that essentially functioned the same as this air pump.
I believe the Air Pumps are on the '06+ models (2.5 liters) and the Catted Up-Pipes were in the '02-'05 Model (2.0 liters), but I could be wrong.

The secondary air pump only runs for a minute or so on cold start up, yes it does modify your smog equipment, but has no impact on tail emmissions after the solenoids closes. I deleted mine for the same problem you are having and had it tuned around. Left the pump still in there so it will pass the visual. Its not a hard job to install the deletes, takes a couple hours. A pro tuner will have to remove the codes though.
06 sti does not have the air pump, 07 sti has one valve, 06-07 wrx has 2 valves for the airpump.

No, my car comes up for its first smog in November of this year, it's an 06. The car would have to be on a lift to see that the tubing has been disconnected. It cannot be seen from the top. If you were really concerned about the visual, you could get longer bolts and place the factory tubes over the deletes and you wouldn't be able to see it from under the car either.
