CA Smog question

i recall hearing of a specific stipulation wherein if you lived X amount of miles away from the nearest DMV office, you did not have to smog your vehicle.

is this just urban myth or real?

if its real, what is the stated distance?

never heard of it, sounds stupid if u ask me...
its like saying if u live X amount of miles from a PD, you can smoke weed

WRBLUEballs 10-07-2008 01:07 AM

hey joel. i dont think its real... If it was i would force my parents to move right next door to the DMV haha.

what about if you live x miles from the nearest DMV office you can't get your license? Dude, there are some laws that'll only work one way when logically they should go both ways, but they never work in your favor.

Oh, and the DMV office doesn't smog your car, independant smog stations do

100 miles from shores.

hah! wow... alrighty...

well, the rumor that i heard is that if you live 50 or more miles from the DMV, that you were only required to pay for your registration renewal, but not smog as it would not be convenient. or something to that effect.

looking at it again, it doesnt make any sense. but, i'm going to keep looking... heh heh... :)

Only "deal" like that in CA is that if you live more than xx miles from a Test Only smog station, they can't make you do test-only. You do still have to do a regular smog though.

Buddy of mine in the Impala SS world (which those cars, 94-96, are pretty much all on test-only now :( ) who lives in the sticks about 30 miles from Bakersfield gets a break because of that one :)

there are 3 smog zones in california basic, enhanced and change of owner, its not based on DMV distance. its based on area population, for instance santa cruz is a basic area cars in the program are subject to a 2-speed idle test, san jose aswell as most metro areas are enhanced wich means dyno test, rural areas like deep on the coast casidero etc are smog test for change of ownership only, they have no scheduled test.

you mean as far away from a DMV as possible :noidea:? who would wanna live next to a DMV? thats like a pothead wanting his backyard next to a police station!
