Berkeley area spring experts, need help!

Hi everybody,

I recently got Prodrive springs installed on my '03 WRX. The right rear spring has been making a LOT of noise, I'd classify it louder than "clunking". I'd describe the sound as something sounding loose, almost like a piece of metal moving up and down a bolt. At first I thought it might have been a loose nut on the swaybar, but I've checked it and it looks fine. I know springs need time to settle, but this doesn't sound normal (even though I don't really know what 'normal' sounds like.)

Just wondering, is there anybody in the Berkeley area who might be able to help me diagnose what's going on with my springs? Maybe go for a ride with me to see if you can help me see what to do. I don't have the proper tools (e.g. jack, stands, etc.) to find out what's going on. I'd take it back to the install shop but it's kind of far away and I work a lot.

Thanks a lot,
- Eric

does this noise only happen when you go over bumps.....even the slightest bump on the road?

Hey man,

Actually no. It looks like it happens when any weight is shifted from the left to the right, which made me think it was my swaybar. But I checked all the bolts on the bar, and everything looks fine.

Did you check the 17mm strut top bolts?? That could be where the noise come from.

No, not yet. I haven't had time, frankly, and because this is the first mod I haven't done on my own, I don't know what to look for. I'll look into that, thanks.

is it possible that the strut top has been installed incorrectly? IIRC, they need to be oriented a specific way to avoid rubbing on the inner fender well. This would not cause a clunking, however, but more of a screeching/sharp noise.

The other thing you might want to check is whether the spring is situated correctly on the spring perch. There should be a rubber pad under there as shielding... you may want to consider using some zip-ties to cinch down the spring on the perch correctly if you do end up reinstalling...

I'd love to check all this but I don't have the proper tools for inspection (e.g. jack and stands.)

I'd love to, but honestly I have no idea what's where. This is why I asked in the first place, because it's the first mod I've not done myself, so I need help (a lot of newbie help) with it. Where is this washer located? Any online sites that would illustrate this process?
