AUDT: Is it illegal to drive without a hood?
Hi all.
Is it illegal to drive without a hood? I am dropping off my hood to Ballz to have it refinished, and I was wondering if it was okay to drive around without a hood for a few hours. TIA. |
Hmm thats a good question
|
It is only going to be for 45 minutes. I figure, leave the hood on the car, pull up, take the hood off, drive home. Big deal.
|
i don't think it's illegal..... as long as stuff isn't flying off

Apparently illegal in Maryland, but okay in Virginia and Alabama. |
call a cop and ask
|
**** double post... sorry
|
It should be ok... I have seen a few cars without hoods... but that doesn't make it legal...
|
hehehe just tell the cop that it broke and you are driving your only vehicle to pick up the replacement
but that doesn't make it legal either |
thats why they invented blue tape. or white tape for your case.
its definitely illegal. Why do you think 1/2 of new cars are but ugly? because their hoods need creases or bulges to aid in pedestrian crash tests. mazda 6, prius etc. youll get a fix it ticket i bet. |
just pretend you didn't know.
|
Does anyone know for sure?
|
hey dude. for real. just call your local pd. Its not a huge deal. Just call and ask. Its not like you have to give them any info. Just call the local number NOT 911, and ask "hey i need my hood to be fixed tomorrow and I have a few errands to run while doing that, is it legal for me to drive without a hood on my car." I use to do it, calling and asking i mean. And then my wife started working for them, so now i just ask her. LOL
|
That's a good question. Anyone else remember back when all the "Five Point Slows" and other American cars were running around with no hoods and chrome blowers or air filters flapping around in the wind?
|
just do it kevin
jeeez |
Kevin, you should be fine, it's just for a few hours. But yea, just call Fremont PD and ask on their non emergency line.
|
just do it, few hours you dont get caught that easy. and tell us after you find out. i want to know also.
im pretty sure its illegal though. |
we're in California, its illegal!

If it ever happened to you you wouldn't say that- OK well maybe hoods don't but latches sometimes do- I had it happen on my Audi at 60 MPH on the Richmond Bridge, it was dam scary! I think if my bike rack hadn't taken most of the impact, my windshield would have wound up in my lap. I slowed down, put my flashers on and drove looking out the side window to get off the bridge, put the hood back on (both hinges broke, but it was bent over the bike rack enough to keep from falling off) and drove slowly to Kragen and bought some hood pins. |

kevin do u have any mods* under the hood...?
it seems though fremont cops have been a lil *****y lately and pulling over "modified" cars lately (they always have been) but they are going crazy and knowing when cops are dicks theyll get you for anything... |
Engine is stock. Everything.

LOLOLOL mess up hahah |
Is illegal, but the most you will get is a fix it ticket if you get caught, which should be $10 after correcting.
Just do it. |

i would imagine if old hot rods can do it.. a newer car can.

Yeah... "Oh, officer... I didn't realize that my hood was gone. I thought something looked a little different." :D I searched for "hood" in the California Vehicle Codes and didn't see anything pertaining to having to have a hood when driving. I'm not going to say it's legal, but I couldn't find anything. I'd say yeah... your best bet is to ask someone and make sure you get their name and department, etc. in case they tell you wrong. |
