Anyone play the drums?

Just wondering if any of my fellow BAIC folks play the drums? Ive always just screwed around with my friends drumsets but now im actually looking into buying my own set and learning. The only problem is that I have no idea what the hell to look for. I dont need a baller set, just a good beginners/intermediate set.

silverbullet415 11-05-2008 08:50 PM

yea i used to play the drums in high school and i know my stuff pretty well, think i saw u on haight on sunday around 4ish with ur green rims looks clean i was in the silver bugeye

I play. My first real set (still have it) is a Pacific Drums by DW set. When I got it, it was $599 drop shipped right to me. However, now I've noticed they are going for a lot more. I don't know if it's due to quality or just because people were buying them so they jacked up the price.

I'd suggest getting a cheap set for a couple hundred bucks before throwing down the cash for a medium-quality set. One thing to keep in mind is your neighbors though :)

i wish i had a set. I wanna play.

VRT MBasile 11-05-2008 08:56 PM

I was actually debating selling my set when I move to San Jose, but I think I'm just going to get mesh heads instead, best feel for a soundless alternative.

lanz0r 11-05-2008 09:10 PM

Tama or Yamaha

Irish_car_B0mb 11-05-2008 09:12 PM

should I just craigslist it then? how much is a good beginners set new? As for my neighbors, yea, they arent goin to like it that much. When I get my set, im most likely just going to keep it at my grandparents guest house in St Francis woods

sigma pi 11-05-2008 09:40 PM

you'd need a throne (I suggest a Pork Pie one.....they are amazing) and I'd add a ride cymbal/cymbal stand. That'd be a pretty good beginner set

here's a GREAT value set. the yamaha stage customs can't be beat for entry level. look on musician's friend for reviews.

lanz0r 11-06-2008 09:25 AM

^^ Like I said Tama or Yamaha fit the budget for good cheap drums

right on for your input guys. Im goin to start shopping around online/craigslist today and tomorrow. Ill probably stop by guitar center and mess around with a few of their setups as well.

Unit 91 11-06-2008 10:24 AM

Make sure you have plenty of cowbell.

I can play basic beats, but that's about it. My feet and hands don't disconnect so well. I'll stick to guitar unless I magically figure it all out.

lanz0r 11-06-2008 10:27 AM

Guitar is win

gmodc7 11-06-2008 11:00 AM

hey man, i started on rock band and eventually bought an roland electronic set. its quiet and good for learning, but if you have the room and noise capacity, id go with acoustic for the real experience. i have my roland in my garage and i play all the time to songs i like (from the aux ipod input). i havent had a lesson yet and im half decent from just playing along and figuring it out. youre welcome to come play mine and see how you like it. rolands like mine are around 2300 new and 1500-2000 on cl.

so steezy 11-06-2008 03:47 PM

just came back from spending 3 hours at guitar center. Yamahas are really good for the price. oh yea, guitar center is the s***! all the employees there are super chill and let me go to work on their drums.

Irish_car_B0mb 11-06-2008 03:50 PM

I would never be good at drums. I have to play drums on rockband on easy cuz i cant get the hand foot coordination down. my wife though can play hard on all and expert on most. Me I just guitar or if i am drunk I have been known to sing a song or 2.

wrxisthebest 11-06-2008 03:52 PM

i play, i play... have for 5 years lol... i love it

I hate the electric drums due to the lack of realistic stick response (unless you get the $5000 set with the mesh heads and semi-realistic cymbals)

I agree. Nothing like the real thing...specially if you want to get rid of some stress..LoL

Here's my theory.....If you have some sense of timing..and if you can drive stickshift, you "should" be able to keep a basic beat going..haha
I dunno...just my thought.

but do I hear ..."jam session"????? haha

nuclearfiziks 11-06-2008 05:32 PM

i play drums, but i'm still considered a noob.
if you're serious of getting a new drum set. ill ask my friend coz he gets hook ups at guitar center in SF.
yeah my drumset is a handmedown - i like it coz it's free!! hehe

Roland mesh heads are very good. I have the td6sx set and i love it. Mesh head sets start at around 2000 now, its a very good option, but i do agree, the 'cymbalism' does kind of suck at times. I have housemates that would flip **** if i practiced real drums at the hours i do so these wil work for now. When i get decent and get my own place ill definitely go acoustic though. Like I said, if you have the means, go acoustic but e-drum technology is pretty good now.

salvator_rizzo 11-06-2008 10:58 PM

I play drums as well - I am ok i guess. I've been playing for 2 years now, but i only took lessons for about 6 months, so i dont have a lot of special technique

I bought a pulse drumset awhile back, it came with everything, 3 cymbols, a 5 set drum set for like 450 or something. Its a good beginner set, but I played a really expensive drumset and I swear I was better, it just sounds so much nicer. I dunno, someday ill get one, but for now all my money goes into my car
