Anyone have any feedback for "Stylinmotors"?

Background: I'm in the process of fitting an STi top mount on my bugeye and I'm anticipating the inevitable y-pipe fitment problem. I have a silicone samco y-pipe now for my WRX IC, and yes - I am aware that I can cut it and put a sleeve extension in there, but I'd rather do it the "right" way (especially because then I can sell the samco y pipe).

The intercooler I have purchased is coming with the hard y pipe, and to the best of my knowledge there is only one available kit to use this IC on the bugeye. Stylinmotors sells a kit that has an extended elbow and TB coupler. It seems like they've done their homework, but I haven't been able to find much feedback on the quality of their products (2 or 3 posts on nasioc).

Has anyone here purchased anything from Stylinmotors? Would I be better off purchasing (and trimming) a 2" 90 degree elbow from a more established maker like hosetechniques?

STi top mount on the bugeye is such a common modification that I'm surprised I haven't found more info on these guys.

Styling motors is fine, ive bought stuff from them haha. Also i was researching this very subject myself and found out Stylingmotors the same way haha. I would pick it up from them.

The other option I'm considering would be to piece this kit together from another manufacturer like hosetechniques. Although there is less uncertainty about the quality of their products, I would have to do more trimming (to the elbow) because their hoses aren't intended for any particular application.

I have the stylin' motors kit. I bought it when I got the STi TMIC but ended up swapping the TD04 for a VF43 and using the stock STi hose (I had to shorten the stock hose too). The kit seems nice, hoses seem to be of good quality and the clamps are pretty cool. I'm planning on using the kit, just haven't gotten around to it since things currently work fine as-is.

My car is an '07 FXT, so fitment would be same as the '06+ WRX -- stock TB hose is fine. You'd need a longer TB hose on a Bugeye, I believe.

If you want to check out the kit in person, I'm in SF and should be at BAM on Sunday. If "SB" in your location is "San Bruno", I work on Elm/Bayhill.

Stan: That's a nice offer but unfortunately I'm all the way down in Santa Barbara. I'm glad to hear that the kit seems to be high quality.

Has anyone trimmed up a generic 2" elbow for this application? I can piece all of this together from hose techniques for around half the cost of the stylin' motors kit (once they get the 2" elbow back in stock).

FWIW, this hose doesn't look much different from the elbow hose in the stylin' motors kit -- you have to trim that one too. I can take pictures tonight if you want, maybe mine is alot longer on one side (it would suck if the elbow hose you got was too short).

The Stylin' Motors kit comes also with the TB hose and some nice clamps, other than that I don't see any difference with it vs. piecing a kit together on your own.

That was exactly what I was planing on using. Hose Techniques says that this hose has a 4.18" leg length. I'm not sure exactly how they measure that, but I would assume it's like this:

I'm going to check on that ^^^ with their customer service department.

If you get a chance could you take a rough measurement of the elbow in the kit and let me know if it is much longer than 4.18"?

Let me fish around the garage tonight, if I find the kit I'll snap some pics next to a tape measure and post it here.

A sales representative from Hose Techniques confirmed that the diagram I created does represent the way they measure leg length.
"You measure from the center of each leg I.D.
Then where the lines cross (intersect) is the point where the leg length
measurement starts, and goes out to each "opening".

You are correct in your sketch."
That may be too short to reach the turbo. Measure the stock elbow hose if you have one. I'll measure the stylin' hose tonight.

nice diagram haha - hope it works out with ur buy yo!

Alright, here are pictures of my Stylin' Motors hose kit. Hate to say it, but I don't think the 4.18" hose is long enough for the TD04, that thing is dinky.

I'm sure you are aware of this but I'll mention it anyway since I was in the same boat: you can put the money you are planning to spend for the hose + proceeds from sale of your y-pipe towards a VF39 and get actual power gains, you can most likely use the stock STi elbow hose. Just the STi TMIC won't gain you anything, honestly. Plus, you'll need a splitter anyway (although I ran with a VF43, stock splitter and scoop for 1 1/2 years and it was fine).

akdmx 09-07-2010 08:19 PM

Great pictures! You're right - 4.18" isn't going to do it.

I was just going to make the "Welp, we need a bigger turbo" joke. Although the VF39s can be had for not much more than the cost of a few silicone hoses, the true cost of this alternative would include fuel system upgrades, and potential transmission problems ($$$).

I'll scour the internet for an elbow with 7" legs (and most likely get bored of that set up, and kick it up to a VF soon after).

Thanks again for the conclusive pictures.

stan_t 09-07-2010 08:50 PM

Check it. You can score a good VF39/VF43 for $250-$300. You already have the TMIC, you are basically there. A nice downpipe and STi catback is all you need.

You guys have the 2 liter and tall gears, you need more torque, VF* will do it for sure. Have it tuned to 14psi with a solid flat torque curve, your injectors/transmission/diffs will be just fine for a long time if driven safely, you'll eat beemers and Mustangs all day long. Your car is lighter, it should really move.
