I didn't find this out until recently, but if you go to Autozone, you can borrow an OBD-II reader for free. We checked the code in the parking lot and gave it back to them. They asked for a credit card to hold onto while we had the reader (another Autozone said they'd hold onto your liscence). Alternatively you can give them a $200 deposit and you can take the reader home with you.
