'02-'07 Exhaust discussion
I searched for something like this, but did not see anything. If I missed it, please berate me accordingly.
Basically, I am trying to sort out my exhaust, and it seems like every time something is changed, it gets worse.
What am I looking for? Basically something that sounds about like my Vishnu non-signature system, but has twin-outlets and will flow adequately for my car's power level (2.0L, 275-300whp). Looking for a bit of rumble, but nothing crazy, and hoping to have minimal drone.
The twin-outlet thing is basically how all this started, and now is becoming less important. If I could find a twin-outlet Vishnu exhaust for sale used, I would probably just pick it up and be done.
I started with a classic Vishnu non-signature, single outlet turbo-back that was put on my car back in 2003. In the process of trying to figure this out, and smog my car at the same time, I have picked up the following:
1. Stock '06 STi downpipe and cat
2. Stromung shorty divorced downpipe
3. Stromung high-flow cat pipe
4. Perrin twin-outlet catback
Couple weeks ago my car had the stock downpipe and cat, with the Perrin cat-back, and that was loud but I could deal with it. Now, for some reason my car has the Vishnu downpipe and feeds into the Perrin catback, which I did not know was possible, and sounds terrible.
I am not using the Stromung parts because when I got home with them I realized the cat pipe has the tranny-hanger torn off and it will need to be fixed before I can use it. While I am waiting, I was going to have the shorty down coated - but at this point, I am thinking of just sticking the Vishnu back on, selling all the other stuff and just living with the big single outlet.
The Perrin twin-outlet catback is an awesome, beefy piece that I was hoping to use (since it looks like it will outlast the car) but I have been reading things here and there about how all a catback does is make noise. I want to actually try a stock STi axleback on my car and see how it works. Would be awesome to dyno it in that process.
A friend of mine has a non-signature twin-tip exhaust sitting in his office but won't sell it to me. DOUGH.
Also, I have noticed that headers tend to make exhausts incredibly loud as I ran my old RS with a ScoobySport for a while and then ended up changing stuff around after the header as it made the whole thing waaaay too loud. I assumed that the turbo on my WRX would quiet things down a bit, but nope - it's nutso. Once out on the motorway, it's pretty fun, but around the neighborhood it's just crazy loud.
So... What exhausts does everyone have? What works for you? My car sounded perfect for me with the Vishnu setup on it, but now sounds sort of like a truck that is missing some important exhaust parts.

i ran a catless dp to the oem STi cbe. By butt dyno i did feel a lack of torque, but it wasn't that much, and it didn't sound that great. I never head any of the vishnu exhausts so i cant really help there. The only other twin tips i know are the borlas.

I have the turboxs set up. Either catted or catless then I have the rfl or standard muffler. Paired with a gt spec UEL header and catless uppipe from Jeremy. I love the sound of it.

My car felt okay but really sluggish when I had the stock DP/cat on it. Feels much more responsive now, but it is sofa king loud.
Yeah a friend has a header->DP-> stock CBE and it sounds really weird and tinny. Another friend has the same with a LGT and it sounds better, but still not what I want (and that is a totally different system). If I want to get something new, Stromung and Borla is about it really. If I were to go with the Stromung, I might as well just have a resonator installed on the Perrin catback. Both are 3", stainless, twin tip so I can't imagine they would be super different. I believe the Borla is quieter and has a proper muffler but do not know for sure.
Was just sort of hoping someone else ran into this and had a trick to fix it. Was thinking of using the Stromung dp, but then the stock cat section, feeding into the Perrin, with a resonator. But, I don't want to spend all that time and money to have a new thing that sucks the same amount but in a different way.

I think I am cool with the volume of it, though it is seriously loud, but the rasp is what I really don't like. Little too Dukes of Hazzard. Wondering if a resonator will make that go away.
I run a Stromung twin tip, catted grimmspeed dp, and maddad header. Overall volume is pretty mild I would say but to me its great since i dont want everyone looking when i drive down a street. It has a nice rumble that pops a bit on decel. I like the look of the twin tips on the stromungs compared to some of the others since the muffler area is pretty compact and doesnt hand down. If your ever around my area and want to listen just shoot me a pm.

I have a ewg uppipe, Cobb dp and exhaust.. I've owned a borla hush, 5zigen, and some ebay (tsudo) exhaust.. I think Cobb is fairly quiet compared to the other ones..(borla hush gets not so hush after mated to a dp) and not much droning.. only bad thing is, it tapers to 2.5 .. also, no cop trouble

ETS Rotated catless downpipe with Tomei full titanium Expreme Ti exhaust and 44mm EWG. Loud can't even describe it. More like Godzilla yelling at the top of his lungs while riding a pack of fighter jets shooting missles.
