USDM STi revs up there like the 20's.
However, if you know where to go for a valve train upgrade for only a couple bucks, please share!

.... of course, then I need to do a stand alone EMS.

if you go to a perforance auto machine shop they can do it for much cheaper and you should port them too because if your car is going to be down make it worth it

HIGH LIFT VALVETRAIN PACKAGE

Give yourself the peace of mind knowing your valvetrain can support the level of performance you require. With our custom designed valvetrain package, we upgrade the stock springs to custom, high rate, high lift units topped with custom, lightweight Titanium retainers. This allows for higher reliable RPM usage, more aggressive camshaft profiles, and high valve lift before coil bind.

Unlike other spring packages, our kit is completely ‘bolt on’ and requires NO modifications to the cylinder head. They also work with the STOCK valves, install at STOCK heights, and retain the stock keepers. This is a custom, properly engineered solution for SUBARU cylinder heads, not a hodge-podge of parts from other cylinder heads which don’t properly fit. Simply the best, as you’ve come to expect from all COBB products.

PACKAGE PRICE INCLUDES 16 SPRINGS AND 16 RETAINERS TO DO ONE PAIR OF HEADS FOR ONE ENGINE

...........................STOCK Springs ...........COBB Springs
MAX Safe Lift.............. 0.410" .......................0.540"
Seat Pressure .............45 lbs .......................65 lbs
Pressure @ 0.410"..... 120 lbs ....................150 lbs

High Lift Valvetrain Package (SOHC)
Fits: 1999-2004 Impreza (2.5L models)
Skill Required: Expert
Installation Time: 1 hr (w/ heads off)
Price: $495

500 isn't too bad.

www.techworkseng.com has the same kit basically, except it's $400. Their website has been recently updated as well.

what is your overall compression ratio?
You say the stock ecu will run this setup just fine?
How do you set boost control?
Rising Rate Fuel Pressure Regulator is all you need for the fueling?
Could you use a stock turbo setup? (VF39)

I wonder if you could pass smog...

Question SOHC on STI block with stock ECU

Can you run the STI block without boost(N/A) at low CR, until can afford turbo kit?

Yes, but your power and fuel economy would both suck. It's better to just buy the block and not install it until you can afford the rest of the components later.

Car Info: Slower than the guy with all the money :(
Ran my 98 with ej257 block n/a for about a year. The car was pretty weak @ the top, but pulled pretty good on the bottom. I even autocrossed ,and did some lapping. I also don't currently have any type of ecm mods other than a S-AFC. I am currently just running off of the wastegate. The car pulls pretty hard ,but I can't wait to turn up the boost. Oh by the way, I am currently running a wrx turbo w/ custom piping done by a local shop here in Hawaii.
