Be careful as to not inhale any dust/debris created as you drill out & gut your uppipe, as it is carcinogenic (causes cancer).
Wear your favorite dry diving suit w/helmet & respiration equipment, and go at it!
Take a long drill and make several holes in the substrate of the catalyst (the honeycomb stuff you see inside either end of the uppipe), and use some really long needlenose pliers, and remove chunks of the catalyst material.
Then take a wire brush on a long spindle, attach it to your electric drill, and carefully clean out the inside surface until it looks like the photo above.
Make sure that you remove ALL traces of the catalyst substrate, for a stray scrap may destroy your turbo!

Can\'t beat it. I\'m all for buying quality, but since Subaru gave us a cast iron uppipe with a flex joint that already is proven to fit perfectly, why not use it!
This was the first upgrade I did to my car, and I was extremely happy with the increased spool time, and the added peace of mind for running without the pre-turbo cat.
For \'02\'s I would definitely recommend removing the factory EGT sensor, and plugging the hole with a bolt (M12x1.25), and performing the EGT Resistor Fix to prevent Check Engine Lights. The EGT sensor doesn\'t appreciate being in a catless environment, and it is much more prone to failure.
Paying ~200-250 for a catless, flex, 12\" piece of pipe is lunacy. It\'s been proven that the stock gutted uppipe performs exactly equally with aftermarket offerings (searches will reveal Matt762\'s comparisons on NASIOC).
Enjoy, the spoolup and the savings.

Pros:
Cattless=more power
Cons:
install pita
If you dont know how to gut your own uppipe then you can just buy one off of ebay for pretty cheap. THen you sell your old one the same guy so he can gutt and sell that. I payed 75 shipped and then sold the old one to him for 40 shipped so it was like 35 dollars for this thing. However install was 200 dollars which sucks.

Pros:
quicker spool, a bit more power, nice whistle sound!
Cons:
CEL fix needed
I did the same as above and got one off the guy from Ebay...quick and easy delivery and a nice gutting job. If you want your up-pipe to pass a visual check when the law pulls you over, this is a good mod.
