re: nokian hakkapellita Q
The Hakka Q's are nothing short of awesome. Truly amazing snow and ice grip, that can only be beaten on ice bu studded tires. The dry grip is ok, but nothing like a performance tire. The wet grip in the rain is exceptional, probably because its tread looks like the soles of a boat deck shoe. I found that it has much better wet performance than my potenza re-92's.
There is a bit of a noise associated with winter tires, but its not too bad (you wouldn't notice it, unless you drive the car all the time), and its nothing like studded tires.
I had a blast with them last winter on Long Island.
One of the best points about the Hakka Q's, is their longevity. They outlast the blizzak's 3 to 1.
The down side, is a "squishy" ride, which kinda feels like you're standing on a pencil eraser, but this is common among most winter tires anyway.
BTW, I thought the Hakka Q's were being phased out (I was really upset). Are they still available?

thanks, litman, good stuff. do you have any experience with the michelin arctic alpin? i would guess the nokians to be superior in the snow/ice and the michelins having better dry road performance.
i certainly want to be well prepared when the snow does fall, but the large majority of winter in new jersey is cold & dry with any snow quickly cleared from the roads by the plows.
check this: http://www.nokiantires.com/newsite/map.cfm sts is now the supplier (at least in nj). i was quoted $99/tire for 195/55/15 at the ewing nj sts dealer; stock size for my integra type r.

No, I don't have any experience with the Michelins. I can say that on dry pavement, I kinda miss my summer tires when zipping around turns. Otherwise, I don't mind the Hakka Q's, and I find them superior to my RE 92's in the rain.
My RE 92's are just about dead, and I don't think I'm going to put them back on, after I switch to winter mode this year, so I need to find a replacement for them.
BTW, from Nokian's web site, the only two winter passenger car tires they list, are the Nokian WR, and the Hakka 2.
Those are high speed friction tires, and studded winter tires respectively. I don't see the Hakka Q, or the NRW any more.
I do see an NRVi, and an NRZi, which look like excellent replacements for the RE 92's though.

I have the Nokian WRs and like them so far but then again they have yet to see real snow. They don't behave like typical snow tires on the dry road and the wet they are great. They are not performance tires in dry but are better performance than the RE92s. The downside is that they are pricey Greer Enterprises in Milwaukee is a good place to get them.
