In the case that you are required to run chains on your AWD car, chances are CalTrans/CHP would have already closed down the roads, or so I have been told.

If you don't want to buy a dedicated set of snow tires (the ones with the mountain snowflake symbol), make sure your existing tires have decent tread, preferably 6/32" or more.
Buy some tire cables at Walmart and keep them inside your car. When you arrive at a chain checkpoint, they'll most likely wave you through. If you are stopped, let them know the car has AWD and show them the box of tire cables. Then they'll let you proceed.
The exception is R3 chain control. Then everyone, regardless of 4WD/AWD, must chain up.
Since you'll most likely never have to install the tire cables, return them to Walmart for a refund. I've done this for the past two years.

ok thank you for your smart a$$ remark which was not needed... but as stated above going through the manual it mentions chains!

You'd still have to spend money, but here's a craigslist posting for studded snow tires in Palo Alto:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/pts/1496623776.html
It's a far drive for you but it beats not having any traction with summer tires. Or maybe you could find someone to trade their snow tires for your summer tires.
