How Bad are Stock Tires?
I'm putting together my list of options for a future purchase of a WRX wagon. The stock Bridgestone tires on 16" wheels get terrible reviews from Tire Rack purchasers....real bad things said about snow and rain. Any comments on this issue? It bothers me that someone looking for an awd car for performance in bad weather would be shod with tires that are substandard. If the stock tires are ok in the bad weather, I'll probably go aftermarket for some OZ wheels and high performance summer tires for the nice months. Advice, anyone?

hmm. i hate my stock tires. it's rather fun though. When it rains, it's really slippery. I dunno if you guys want that or not... i do. no other way to get my car spinning. hehehe.
they are terrible tires. Seriously.. i'm going to get new ones once these go down to 20%.

Just put a set of Michelin HydroEdge on my '03 WRX wagon 2K miles ago. Managed to get 28K out of the RE92s.
They are great. Low noise, way more sticky in the corners, don't wander on dry payment & GREAT in the rain !!!
They are directional tires, great styling & have a 85,000 mile treadlife warranty.
Paid ~ $130.00 each installed w/ M&B

I don't really know, this is more speculation. But my guess is that they aren't "substandard" and will be fine, but for people wanting uber performance they aren't enough. I think many of the people complaining about them switch to competition grade tires, which are made for different purposes. Don't know this tho, just my 2 cents. GL

For me, the RE92's were um, interesting... On wet days, I could pull 4-wheels drifts on the dime But of course, with an AWD, the point is drive with grip right? There were a few times I tried coming in on hard stops, and pulled fast U-Turns, and the tires would chirp and slide a bit. It's unsettling if you don't expect it, but when you get used to it, it's actually kinda fun. Also, I think the 205/55/16 size is too small for our cars.
BTW, I got ride of my Rarely Effective 92's a few months ago, and swapped up to 225/50/ZR16 Potezna RE750's, and the difference is like night and day

It's wierd. A lot of people on this board state that RE-92's are bad.
I have to disagree to an extent. When I drove off my Subaru from the lot, and for the first thousand miles or so, I personally thought the grip was pretty good.
It could of been I wasnt use to the car or what not, but I was pretty happy with them.
Then after a while, Im guessing after a few months of driving, I got use to them.
Around 35,000 miles I started to notice the car didnt move like it use to anymore.
I removed those tires at about 40,000 miles. The thread was low, but I still had some. Im guessing Im could have put an extra 10000 miles on them. I wanted to use them for all they were worth before swapping out. I was pretty happy with it because I put 40,000 miles on those tires. Saves me cash $$$.

Two good things about the RE92's:
They screamed to let you know when they were breaking loose.
When they did break loose, they were pretty progressive and predicatable. No surprises.
At least that was my experience with them. Other than that, they pretty much sucked! hahahahhaha!!!
