I'm pretty sure that it's just time for some new pads, but I thought I'd pick your brains anyway to make sure it's not something more serious.
At pretty much any speed, slow cruising to highway, my rear wheels are making this high pitch squeal, and it only stops when I hit the brakes. I thought the squeal tabs on the pads were only supposed to make noise when you used the brakes, not the other way around.
I've got a '00 RS coupe with a stock brake setup if that helps any one. I'm actually just waiting for my Axxis Ultimates to show up so that I can swap on some slotted WRX front rotors (already bought the brackets).

I got exactly the same problem. In my case the squeal from rear wheels starts after ~ 20 miles of driving (pads heating up?). I have Impreza WRX 2002, and Stoptech stage 2 kit (slotted rotors, Axxis Ultimate pads) with 15K miles on it. Rear pads are still in good shape.
I brought the car to dealer with this problem. They didn't find anything wrong with the brakes. Next thing I am going to try anti-squeal lubricant and to bevel the outer edges of brake pads.

I started having the same problem about a month ago, but recently it just went away, and I haven't had a problem since.
"Warped" rotors normally wouldn't cause a squealing sound, just a vibration. pull all of your pads out, there may be some debris stuck in a caliper somewhere. It's also unlikely to be a wheel bearing, or it would have totally given out by now probably. Those manifest themselves as a whonky, whirring sound and clunking or vibration beforem really making noise.

Mine is not a constant squeal, but intermittent....(squeal, no squeal, squeal, no squeal...etc, etc, etc)
They said the rear discs were just warped enough to be making minor contact with the pads.
I'm thinking that the 4 pots up front have something to do with uneven braking force in the rear?
Should I try getting the rear discs turned? I have heard both sides on turning discs but still don't know which is best (cant spring on new rotors right now.)
I have the exact same thing, but mine happens at slow speeds. I just changed the fronts to 4-pots. I did not think to check the rears! I will have to take a look.
John
but anyway this happened to me a while back. my brakes squeal REALLY bad at low speeds like coming up to a stop sign. but one time it made the noise without me pressing the brake. i was quite confused.
________ Uhwh
bump, how did it turn out adding the anti squeal docent? I've got a 4 pot front and two pot rear set up and it does it randomly too (right rear). I'm used to it so i deal...pads are like 40% left...i'm going to take a can of brake cleaner to teh calipers and rotors.
