Took me a little while to find all of these. They are from a ton of different sources (some of which were conflicting). Most are pulled from the 2002 service manual.
There is a lot missing, so please help me fill this in and maybe we could get it stickied.

the owner's manual for my '95 legacy says that the fluid capacity for the auto transmisison is 4.3 US qt. it lists 8.3 as the maximum holding capacity, but specifically says to never fill to that level.

The difficult this is to get who ever is working on your car to actually follow recommend torque settings and fluid requirements. Most of these aholes don't care and they just do whatever.
Great info, thanks for all the research.

I guess it's weird that no one else has pointed out, but the 2004 manual says:
Manual Transmission Oil:
3.7 qts. for 5-speed
4.3 for 6-speed
And 3.7 qts in my 04 wrx definitely filled it.

question: what source did you get these quantities from?Reason for asking: today I had my oil changed at the dealership on my 07 WRX. I had taken in a 6 pack of synthetic and asked all containers be returned. They did and as close as could be they used 4.8 qts. I checked the dipstick about 3 times and the level seemed to be about right. I questioned the service manager and showed him my owners manual which read 4.2 quarts. He hem'd and haw'd and said he'd check and came back out and said 4.5 was right. I gave him the polite stink eye and let it go at that. But it looks like 4.8 is right. Ps I know you said MOST were taken from '02 manual, but exception on Turbo???? DOUBLE PS The car has been sitting in the garage for about 4 hrs now and the oil level is definitely high by about 1/8" on one side and 1/3 " on other of the dipstick after triple check. God I hate being **** but this stuff drives me nuts.

The 2002 Owner's Manual specifies 4.8 quarts of engine oil for the WRX and 4.2 quarts for the normally-aspirated 2.5 Impreza RS.
As long as the correct amount of oil has been added to the crankcase after an oil and filter change, you can note the level on the dipstick after the car has been sitting for a while (on level ground, of course) and just use that as a reference when you check the level between oil and filter changes.
