Could a wrong gas cap cause leakage of gas into the engine / engine oil?

I lost my original Forester's gas cap. I put another one (not Subaru's) that seemed to fit. Later, I noticed some gasoline in my oil. Could it be due to the gas cap not fitting exactly?

Thanks,
Gil

i don't think that would cause gas leaking into your engine oil. You would get a CEL if anything. How do you know you have gas in your oil?

That is blow by. How much gas is in there? Only way the gas can contaminate oil is through piston rins or bad pistons. But I am sure you would notice that as oil would go into combusion chamber and you will burn oil.
