IMO the rex is swiftly becoming a trendy icon very close to civic territory. that's why everyone seems to be buying one.

I have a 2.5 rs sedan and i love it. I have driven many cars and this is by far my favorite to drive expect my parents porsche and corvette. I have driven eclipse gsx and the only thing better about that was the turbo, i've driven a 1984 bmw 745i graymarket car that i used to have and my rs is way more fun. Civics suck compared to the 2.5. All in all I love my 2.5.

I think the RS is a beautiful car, and i would personally own it over the WRX. I just bought mine less than a year ago, and at the time i was considering getting the WRX. However, i didnt like the four doors, and the front end of the WRX didnt appeal to me either. Basically it turned out that all i liked about it was the turbo. Also, where im from the RS is a very rare car, and when the WRX came out the market seemed to be flooded with them.
I will admit that now i do like the WRX more now than i did then (due to more research and aftermarket accessories), but ill always love the RS.

we'll just say i could have bought any subaru on the lot and chose a MY00 2.5RS 5speed in blue ridge.
i waited 8 months for one to come in and it was well worth it.
i prefer the RS for many reasons; looks, price, presence. when a rex rolls by people think "hey look, another one". when a GC8 RS rolls by people think "DAMN, wtf was that"
some think that a wrx is better for it's turbo. an RS can out power a rex with a $4000 turbo kit on stock internals reliably. total cost being about $18k with car and kit. rex? about $2k extra or more.
and presence; when the average person sees a wrx at stoplight next to them they want to race almost right away. they know what they're up against. GC8? most aren't sure if they want to risk a beating against a car they know nothing about. sure the street races become less common and you don't have the same chance at winning as a wrx but, money spent on going turbo could change that quickly.
all in all, the best advice i can give is for you to do what suits you best.

it all depends on your perference.. and your wallet. you can buy a gm6 (2door rs) for about 10k in good condition (if you shop around and haggle) a motor swap from ispeedusa for 02 wrx engine is 7k or a jdm ej20 for half that price. that is about 14-17k for a car that is lighter, better looking(IMO) and faster then the WRX. oh and cheaper insurence... the WRX goes for about 17-20k used and insurence will be pricer.
i myself will be getting a gc6(4door rs)
-anyone know of one for sale near SoCAL??? PLEASE HELP ME!

If your mechanically inclined you could always get a Ej20 drivetrain from an importer and install all of the mechanicals on your own. Then take it to a shop for them to take care of the wiring. If you can get ahold of the wiring diagrams you can do the rewire yourself if you have the patience for it. We installed a Ej20 drivetrain into a friends car and total it took us two days working at a half *** speed.
You could also wait to try and get ahold of a wrecked turbo Forester once they come out. Nothing like a 2.5L motor built for a turbo from the factory.

I've had a 98 2.5 RS for a little under a year and absolutely LOVE it!! I like the fact that it's a 2-door and you just don't see a whole lot of them. Yeah, the WRX has more power, but the RS does me just fine. Suck ***???? um.... NO... in my humble opinion...

I love the looks of the 2.5 RS (00/01), but I wanted more power than it had. I'm not really in to big engine swaps or massive aftermarket installs, so buying more power stock appeals to me.
I picked the WRX because there isn't another car in it's price range that has the same features. The car just works for me - I've wanted one since they came out but I had some other things to buy (like a house) before I would get this. Now that I have the house, I got the car

I must say price played a major roll as well. If I could have afforded a WRX......I'd have one for sure. Even the price I payed was more than I was planning on spending (after someone hit me & totaled my old car & I got SCREWED on the settlement....) But once I actually took it for a test drive I was absolutely hooked & KNEW I wanted that car. I ran the numbers and found out it was indeed "do-able" and snagged it!!! So far, one of the best descisions/purchases I've ever made.
