Catalytic Converters...totally necessary?
I live in a smaller community about and hour outside of St. Louis. If I were to install a cat-less exhaust and downpipe, (no cats in car at all) would there be any legal risks involved?
I've never had to go through any emisions tests with any of my cars...and, I've never heard of anyone who has around here. I read about it on forums all the time how you Califonrians have to meet all these requirements or you get ticketed.
So...will I get away without having cats???
It's cheaper to buy parts w/o them, and you make more power. I just don't want to be screwed by cops.

If you installed a catless turboback and catless UPpipe, you would be totally catless. It is a federal crime to remove catalytic converters from your car and I think you can be fined up to $10,000. Your car's exhaust will stink quite a bit more than stock, and a smart cop will probably notice if he's looking for it. You probably won't have anything to worry about in Missouri, but it's still a risk. I'm keeping a high-flow cat in my downpipe when I get my turboback to keep the smell down a little bit and hopefully pass the visual inspection when I have it smogged in a couple years.

If you have your car inspected for emissions, then it will not pass the visual inspection (in California at least) for the catalytic converters. If you aren't required to have it inspected for emissions in your state, then you won't have to worry about that.

actually, i'm in Illinois.
what do the fumes from a catless exhaust smell like?...really bad?
I know everything I want to buy if I go the catless route, but if I do put a cat in my uppipe...what exhaust set up do you guys reccomend?
I'm talking up/downpipe/exhaust here.

no, the mechanic will not fine you when you take it in. they just won't put a sticker on it until you get a working cat in it. thats here in maine anyway. we don't have smog tests though, which you would fail with flying colors with no cats. and yes, the car does stink to drive behind. my friends hate to drive behind me. i have been pulled over 3 times since removing it and no one has thought a thing about it. if you're going do anything, get a catless up pipe. reduces the risk of shredding your turbine from broken platinum.
