What's the difference between 1 and 2 piece UPs?

Is there any significant difference between a 2 piece UP like the APS

vs a 1 piece UP like the Helix?

1 Piece = Less bolts, 2 Piece = MORE bolts . . . go with the helix, its the best one out

APS is two piece because the large half is cast iron and the flex section is steel. Otherwise there would be no reason to do that.

The best uppipe on the market, uniquivocably and without question, is the Crucial Racing one. Higher grade steel, ceramic coated, no-hassle lifetime warranty, copper gaskets, new studs, EGT fix, PERFECT fitment, proper diameter... nothing compares.

Okay, I got a touch out of control in THIS THREAD but it's probably a good read for anyone looking for an uppipe or anybody who thinks a solid uppipe is, in some way, a negative (because it's not).

A properly made, solid uppipe will out perform and out last any flex uppipe. Please see the above-linked thread for why I say so...

--- and I hear that steering rack is AWESOME!!!! The things people are saying who have driven it just sound amazing. ---

I think they just add the steering quickener from Howe Racing.

Wow, after reading that it really has made me reconsider. Too bad their up pipes are out of stock right now.

You're right. It's not quite a bolt-on though . Misterx (owner of WRXFanatics and Crucial Racing) posted a couple threads about it over on WRXF if you're interested. The most recent one is here.

I really wish I had the cash for it. My steering is just barely even slower than the WRX's.... Unfortunately it's an even bigger PITA for me because the splines on the WRX column don't fit on my steering rack, so I'd have to get a Legacy column out of a wrecked car and send it off to Crucial. Arrrgghhhh... complications of swaps

I'd just go with the helix. I ran one in my car for a good amount of time and never had it leak. It's great quality and the flex/overall fitment makes for a really easy install. I wouldn't go with the APS, just one more joint in the exhaust that could possibly leak.

off-topic, but I'd rather install a quick-ratio rack than R&R the collumn!

Yeah I think that's the "preferred" option but that's like $1500+...

...apparently the unit Crucial is using is used in rally cars and other race applications, so I guess it's supposed to be very burly. Hopefully one day I'll be able to find out for myself, lol...

...basically it's just an overdrive gear. From the perspective of your steering rack, it just thinks you're turning the wheel really quickly. Because it's an overdrive, steering is a bit heavier (wheel is harder to turn... BMW-like apparently)...

hmm that sounds highly desireable, I wonder if the quick-ratio 12.5/1 rack feels equally heavier...

If you install copper gaskets your exhaust will not leak. If you properly install your exhaust and re-torque after warm up it will not leak. Most of the time people **** leaks because they do a half-*** job. The APS upipe is far better in quality to a helix up. EVerything that APS does requires a method to thier madness. The cast section of the uppipe requires a mold which can be very expensive to produce. Companies like APS, Cobb, take all things into consideration like engineering the design and flow characteristics of the uppipe/downpipe. Any moron can take a pipe and bend it slap a few flanges on it and call it an uppipe. Those of you that have champagne taste on a beer budget will tout these uppipes as the "best, greatest,". I am not one bit impressed by the quality of helix.
