Angry HVAC Blower Problem

it seems that my blower fan/ control is fubar'd. it wont blow on 1/2/3, but will blow on 4. So i either freeze or roast.

when you go from off to 1, i do hear a slight cllick (like a relay kicking on. but from 1-3 no other noises, its just dead. any ideas on the problem ( dirty contacts for the switch itself possibly?)?

its a 97 impreza L..

thanks in advance.

I don't have access to the actual wiring diagrams for your car, but in most vehicles the blower is controlled through a resistor module for the lower speeds, and gets full battery voltage for the highest speed. The failure you describe would indicate that the resistor unit has probably burned out so the lower speeds no longer work.
The click you hear would be the relay that sends power to the blower when the switch is turned on, so that part of the circuit is working but the power doesn't get past the open resistor.

the $64,000 question... can i just replace the resistor, and where abouts would it be located (hopefully right by the controls!)

thank you very much for the info....

edit

just went to 1subaruparts.com, they have a blower motor switch. the only other parts they had listed under hvac was a blowermotor and the dash controls.

hopefully this wont be a pain in the ass like changing the blower motor on my 84 cabrio was (basically had to pull the whole dash out of the car to change it).

I don't know where the resistor unit would be located on your car, but normally it wouldn't be a part of the switch because the resistors are large wirewound ones and they get hot from the high current.
You should actually speak to or email a dealer before ordering what might be the wrong parts. Also try posting in the Normally Aspirated forum, there may be some other folks there with similar cars who know where it is.
