I'm generally pretty picky with my hip hop. I like the old isht and the real isht.
But I do like a few of the newer guys. I have not cared for the last 2 50 Cent records but I got "Before I Self Destruct" last week and I've listened to it a few times now.... it's pretty damn good.
It reminds me a bit more of his old stuff. Heavier beats and more of an attack style delivery. Plus he's starting to go after people again. The Game for one.
So I recommend it for those guys that like rap. Maybe not so much for the people who only listen to groups like Tribe or Hyro.
I also got the new Shwayze album... interesting. Very "trendy" as far as "hip hop" goes but it's a decent listen.
interesting, I'll give those songs a try. I've been looking for more songs to throw on a cd since I sold my last car and have to downgrade from my memory stick to cds again...
I hate most commercial hiphop, but unfortunately that's the only thing on the radio, which I'm forced to listen to a lot because of people at work that have no taste outside the mainstream.
I love Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Immortal Technique, Atmosphere, Dead Prez, etc etc.

Pretty much all of that is mainstream?
I mean it's not JZ or Lil' Wayne but still.
I'm a fan of all..... haaaa. I remember when I bought the first DP record I was in S.F. I brought it up to the counter and the dude looked at me and said... did you listen to that? And looked at me like I was out of my mind. I said... yeah I like the beats. He said o.k.
he was black.
I'm sure you could see the humor in it.
Blackstar and all related to it are on top of my list for sure.
I used to listen to Blackalicious a lot. Dabbled in Hiero. Then I got into some Demigodz stuff like Apathy and Celph Titled. Loved Jedi Mind Tricks for a while too. Even the joints Stoupe did for Canibus several years ago. I dig Kidz in the Hall and Cool Kids. I listened to a bit of Little Brother (big 9th Wonder fan). I'll listen to the popular stuff too. I can/will enjoy a lot of hip-hop even if a ton of it is dumb. I just like laughing at stuff and having a good time. I'm not even going to front on myself by saying I have to stick to one particular type. I tend to get caught doing the stanky legg at random.
Anyway, by old 50, you mean "Power of the Dollar" type stuff (back when he was with Columbia Records for a hot minute and worked with Trackmasters before he got gunned down) or "Get Rich Or Die Tryin'"? 50 Cent's last album was GARBAGE. I remembered when 50 came out with "Wanksta" back in 2002 and I went and got random songs from his earlier mixtape stuff. I was so confused because the flow was different. He even threw in a few earlier material in the first album. Like he said on "In Da Club", "Go ahead and switch the style up, if they hate, let them hate and watch the money pile up." I suppose his earlier style did sound a bit ordinary (but the writing had a bit more depth) and his current slurred, cockier, over confident, slower flow works better overall.
Asher Roth isn't bad. I played "Asleep At The Bread Aisle" for about a week. I dunno, feels too much like "bro" music for whatever reason to me. I'm just weird.
