Subaru Western Region Sponsors Three-Car ALCAN Winter Rally Team

January 7, 2004, Fountain Hills, AZ – Challenge Driving Events announced that Subaru Western Region will sponsor its three-car entry in the Alcan Winter Rally in February 2004. The 20th Anniversary of the Alcan Winter Rally will start near Seattle, WA and finish 5,000 miles later in Anchorage, Alaska. The nine-day adventure will take contestants through the incredible scenery of Alaska, the Yukon and The Northwest Territories. The rally travels 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle to Tuktoyadtuk, driving on the McKenzie River, which becomes an ice highway in winter. “We are very pleased that Subaru Western Region chose to sponsor our effort, they have great performing vehicles, especially for the extreme weather and road conditions on the Alcan and McKinzie Ice Highway in February, “ said R.Dale Kraushaar, president of Challenge Driving Events.

Many rallyists consider the Winter Alcan to be the premier endurance road rally in North America. Everyday brings a new set of challenges, from driving on frozen rivers, to testing the vehicle’s performance and drivers’ skills on the ice racing stages, to enduring daily drives of 700 miles in sub-zero conditions. To survive in these extreme conditions contestants must prepare their vehicles and themselves well in advance of the race start.

The Alcan Winter Rally is presented every four years. In 2000, the privateer team of R.Dale Kraushaar, driver, Paul Eklund, co-driver and Larry Richardson, navigator won the Alcan Winter Rally with a margin of only six seconds. This year, The Subaru Challenge Team fields a three-car effort made up of a 2004 Subaru Turbo Baja, a Subaru Turbo Forester and a Subaru WRX STi. R.Dale Kraushaar and Jake Engstrom will drive the 2004 Turbo Baja with Larry Richardson navigating. Paul Eklund will drive the Turbo Forester with Kala Rounds as his navigator and co-driver. Glenn Wallace will drive the WRX STi with Greg Hightower as his navigator and co-driver. Kraushaar feels confident that The Subaru Challenge Team can take home a win. “We have a strong three-team entry made up of experienced rallists and racers,” said Kraushaar. Adding to the competition, BMW and Mitsubishi recently announced factory sponsored entries. This will bring together the strongest field of veteran entrants in the Alcan’s 20-year history.

The team writer, Gary Reid will post daily reports including team standings, stories and photos from the road on the team website at www.challengedriving.com.
