x- post 120k maintenence mess

Hi:
New to this forum. I decided to get the timing belt changed at a local Subaru dealer, and got a quote for the timing belt, and a whole lot more!
The total bill is $2267 and a couple of quarters. Does this seem reasonable for the following:
Coolant- 22.34
coolant conditionaer- 1.64
Battery- 89.95
Terminal- 14.75
Adjsuter assembly (whats this??) - 169.51
Alternater belt -15.28
AC belt- 14.10
oil seal -18.92 (2 of them total)
o-ring- 4.81
water pump- 112.04
h20 pump gasket- 3.10
thermostat -17.64
thermostat gasket -4.05
hose- 9.12
hose- 12.45
hose - 6.69
hose - 9.12
radiator hose- 15.73
radiator hose - 12.76
hose - 22.46
something else for - 20.80

labor for all that 667.50.
120k major service fee- re-lube everything, replace plugs, wires, etc. 613.26
and on top of that, the cam belt service of 399.95

I'm sure this has been covered on other threads so if you don't feel like retyping your responses can you at least post a link to them?

Realistically I can change hoses/coolant/spark plugs, etc. Cam belts and gasket replacement is beyond my mechanical abilities and facilities (working on the the street with a good set of hand/bike shop tools).
So- does this estimate seem fair and reasonable? Would going to a non dealer save me a chunk of cash? Does anyone have recommendations for a shop in Oakland or Hayward/ untion city??
Thanks for your time.
Tom

definately check up with all the shops in the area. That seems like a ton of cash.

it's sounds like they are charging your labor by the item. a lot of things would be done at the same time. For example, when doing thermostat, they can do the pump all gaskets, all belts, coolant, and coolant conditioner at the same time.

I recently did that and my labor was about $200 and parts are not much (~$200??).

I did all the filters myself (oil, air, fuel) $30?
I did all the fluid myself (engine, tranny, diff, power steering, brake, clutch, wiper) $50?
I also did the plugs $5?

So say $400 for all belts, pump, thermostat, gaskets, coolant, and conditioner.
And lets go up to $100 on all other parts and fluids
You have about $400 on labor, and I know it doesn't take 4 hours ($100/hr) to do the rest. Of fine, I do, because I am slow, but shops are FAST!

I went to the dealers website. Their 120k service includes the following:

Inspect Clutch and hill-holder system
Perform Replace fuel filter and inspect fuel system, hoses and connections
Replace Camshaft drive belt
Replace Drive belt(s) [Except camshaft]
Inspect Steering and suspension
Perform Inspect brake lines and check operation of parking and service brake system
Inspect Brake linings and drums
Inspect Disc brake pads and discs, front and rear axle boots and axle shaft joint portions
Replace Brake fluid
Inspect Automatic transmission fluid
Inspect Transmission/Differential (Front & Rear) lubricants (Gear oil)
Replace Air cleaner element
Perform Replace engine coolant and inspect cooling system, hoses and connections
Replace Engine oil filter
Recommended Inspection Front and rear wheel bearing lubricant
Perform Rotate and Inspect Tires
Replace Engine oil

for $599. Sounds like I'm triple charged for things.......

That means you would pay $599 for these WORK. All others are just to "look" at them. You can "look" at them yourself. Some are really done together, they just try to keep the list long. No one would ever change oil without changing the filter. If you are doing belts not because it's broken, you'll do all, which is also a good time to do pump and thermostat, which means you'll do coolant as well.

get a list together and PM Gino at MP Motorsports (hayward). he'll give you the option of him procuring all the parts (add like 10%) at dealer discounts or let you get them. Then he'll charge you a flat hrly rate on labor or quote you a fixed rate.

This way you can take care of the things you can do realtively easily and still have professionals do the other stuff.

When I'm done with this project, I'll divulge the dealer. No need to fan the flames of discontent- yet. The dealer has the car half torn apart so- he's gonna end up doing something on the car. It's a matter of how much or how little. I figured there is a lot of dbl billing- it's hard to decipher it. On the dealer website they list Subaru NA's recommended 120k major service- replacing belts, chassis lube, etc. Then they have a 'major service package' that they price. Well, it's vastly different from what Subaru NA considers to be a major service- basically the dealer service is a chassis lube, a tune up (replacing plugs and wires) and replacing all fluids and filters. cam belt, alternator/AC belt are not included. It's confusing due to the overlapping labor charges but parts that need repacing are included in one and not the other.
If I allow them to do just the cam belt, they should also replace the alternator and the other belts.
The coolant hoses REALLY need to be replaced though, and it could use a good tuneup. And then there are the leaking seals- this will be the 3rd time they have replaced them in the last 60,000 miles. Conveniently that work is warrantied 12,000 mi or 12 months. I have been putting 5-8k miles on the car for the last 4 years, so it's been a while, but not more than 12,000 miles.
This is where my decision making breaks down. Do I go full boat? Will full boat be cheaper elsewhere? Do I pay through the nose for the cam belt/alternator/other belts, then do what I can myself and what I can't bring somewhere else? It's gotta be done by the 25th.

Well, I see on paper what I need to do. Hopefully I can get the dealer to understand this.

I believe the 60k is the same as the 120k service. According to Subaru of Santa Cruz's pricing it's $829.95

The 60/90/120 k service is $599 at downtown subaru in oakland- less than santacruz.
belt replacement is $399. waterpump replacement should be done with cam belt replacement as it is behind the cam belt, so I committed to that- $112 for the h20 pump and $125 for installation BS. Since the cam belt is off, exactly how long does it take to pull off the pump-2 hours seems excessive and paddingthe bill.
