Mom is looking for a new vehicle. Found an 09 Forester X (66,xxx asking $12k) at a corner lot that look pretty clean and drove well once started (lol). Took it FW to have them go over it. Head gaskets are seeping and needs brakes (not uncommon for age/mileage), some rust (originated in Illinois) but nothing terrible, and, not surprisingly, the battery is toast. All manageable and not necessarily deal breakers. Got a non-**** off quote from Paul for everything to bring it up to snuff: $3000 (head gaskets, brakes, timing belt, yada yada yada).
Head back to the dealer and pull up to the front "office".
Guido salesman with greased back hair in a hoodie and sweats with giant wad of chew in his lip: *spit* "Hey. Everything good to go?"
Me: "Not quite. [insert list of findings] So, with that I'm going to have to pass."
G: "Anything we can do to change your mind?"
Me: "Are you guys flexible on the price to help me offset some of the cost of the repairs?"
G: "I think $12k is fair for the age and mileage of the ca--"
Me: "High KBB is $11k which is 'free of major mechanical issues'. I'd say needing to have the head gaskets replaced qualifies as a 'major mechanical issue', wouldn't you? That's $2500 to fix."
G: "Uh.. well, we can't come down $2500."
Me: "The brakes need replacing. That's pretty substantial. That's only $500."
G: "We're not making any money at $12k so I don't think--"
Me: "All three times I have attempted to drive the vehicle, it needed to be jump started. Batteries are what, $100? Are you even willing to come down $100 to replace the battery?"
G: "Well, like you said, batteries are only $100."
We exchange blank stares.
Me: *tossing him the keys* "Thanks for letting me drive it."
