I've never had dedicated snow tires on any of my cars. Normal all-season's have worked fine for me through the Colorado winters. But if that's what you want, I've heard the Blizzack's (sp?) are excellent.

I've got a set of summer tires on my 17" rims, and I still have a newer set of stock RE92's on stock WRX rims that I will drive with in the winter until they wear out, and then upgrade the tires to winter tires. But I also wanted a set of dedicated snow tires, so I'm taking my other set (3rd set) of stock WRX rims and am gonna wrap those with strictly snow/ice tire, probably studless. I'm looking into something cheap, but yet will get the job done, nothing fancy. Nokian tires are quite pricey, so I think I'm going with Firestone Winterforce snow tires, something like this...

Tirerack has them for a few bucks more, with cheaper shipping, so I may go through them.
Does anyone know where to buy Yokohama Guardex 600 snow tires? They are supposed to be cheaper, and Tirerack used to carry them, but I have not seen them around for awhile. Are they discontinued?

I'm pretty sure discount tire sells the yoks. You might want to throw in a couple more bucks and get a decent tire, something above a Q speed rating so that you have some kind of sidewall stability.

I don't need a high speed rating on my snow tire...although it would be nicer, they also cost more... for something I will only be driving in the snow. I need snow and ice capabilities rather than sidewall stiffness.

If you live way up in the mountains Blizzaks might be OK. They're good in the snow & ice, but if you drive them on dry pavement much at all the compound that works well will be gone by springtime. They're also poor performers in the dry.
If you live in Denver, Boulder, Co Springs, etc get Nokian's all-season "severe weather" rated tire - used to be Hakkapeliitta but now I think it's "WR A.W.P" or some such. I've had the same set of Hakkapeliittas on for 2-1/2 winters now; my only complaint about them is they take some of the fun out of winter driving because they stick so well. Have to get up a lot more speed before I can break loose and look like a rally driver. :-) They're pretty good for gravel too.
Nokian makes some hard-core studded tires as well and that's what I'd get if I lived up in the mountains, but they're total overkill for the city.
I still run the Falken Azenis in the summer though. The Nokians are at least as good in the dry as the stock tires were, but there's not much out there that sticks like the Falkens.
