oil (consumption) problem?

Well here are the basics of my situation:
I got an oil change (@ jiffy lube) about 800 miles ago. I watched as they the changed the oil and saw the dipstick myself that it was full. now i checked, and the stick was about halfway between full and low. I called about 5 dealerships in the area, and they all pretty much said that that it is normal for the STI to burn between 1-1.5 quarts of oil between changes. I've been told that the dipstick measures (from dot to dot) 1 quart of oil. So if it's down by the low dot, that means I'm short about a quart. Since I don't have a whole lot of time to search, I thought I'd ask. Some friends tell me that it isn't normal to lose that much oil. Others do. I pretty much drive for work 50 miles roundtrip daily. I don't drive hard/fast for the most part. The car is still stock / 14,500 miles. There no leaks on my garage floor or under my car. Should I have reason to be concerned? Or am i just worrying for nothing? I guess the next step would be to actually bring the car to the dealer and have them take a look. But I wanted to see if anyone out there knows what's up before having to spend money. Any advice will help. Thanks.

Josh

I don't think it's normal for ANY car to burn that much oil. That sounds ridiculous. IMHO!!

My WRX burns 1-1.5 quarts between changes. I've got 65K now and I noticed this starting to happen about 40K. Can't tell you whether I have a problem or not, but nothing to speak of to date.

did they add oil to the filter before they installed the new one. you don't have to but if you don't you will run short a little oil and need to add some. Therefore if they didn't add oil to the filter some of it is now sitting in the filter.

the technician I spoke to about oil consumption stated that, "it is normal to burn maybe a quart b/w oil changes within the first few thousand miles", but that it should really slow down after that. 1.5 qts is a lot of oil for an engine to consume.

After changing out the oil, they ran the engine for a few seconds to let oil into the filter and then topped off.

My STi used 1 quart every 3k miles for a while. It would also use a quart every track day until recently. I have started running it a lot harder and feel like the engine is the strongest it has ever run. It has not used/burned oil now for the last two oil changes and track days. The car now has 15k miles on it and the oil has been changed 6 times. It appears to me that it took 10k + for the engine to fully break in. I also have experienced better mileage over this time as well.

-Good luck

Edit: I use redline synthetic oil btw.

may be your engine not break in properly? the piston rings didn't seal well and it burns oil?
too early switch to synthetic oil will cause burning oil as well...

Well, I have an appointment at the dealership today to have my 15k service done. I also mentioned the oil issue and will have them check it out as well. I'll let you know what they find, if anything.

How early is too early? I had my first change at 1000, then switched to synthetic at 4000. As far as what I know, that is standard.

All turbo cars burn oil its normal because of the amount of heat a turbo generates.

my wrx used between 1-1.5qts between changes, and so does my STi, which is at 7k miles.

I drove my WRX hard, and I drive my STi hard as well.

I will switch to REDLINE 15W-50 at my next change, and will switch to REDLINE 10W40 for the winter months.
