Low end - High end power

buying an sti in about a month because the car is un-real. i have test driven one but you can't really test the limits of a car like that while test driving without making the sales person soil himself. if you've got one..........i want to know what the high end response is like. i'm talking from like 60-100, and 100+. the only fast car i'm used to driving is my dad's M5 and i can get almost just as many G's from 60-100 as i can from 0-60. considering the STI runs the same 1/4 mile times (about) i assume that it's the same case? low end power is great but i need a car that can give me chills when i'm already moving as well. so what's the verdict?

the launch is much better than the M5 (AWD) the high end is not.

i can't really compare the two much more than that, never drove / ridden in a M5

in first gear, 2,300-2,500rpm is when the boost really starts to kick

The Sti doesn't pull as hard as the M5 in the 60-100 mph but you will be close. I own a 04 STi and I have driven my buddies M5 you have to make a few changes to equal the pull 60-100mph of the M-5. don't get me wrong my mustang made 448 at the wheels my Sti would get out in front but get run down but so would my buds M-5. I added(STi) a cat back and could CAI which helps alot over the stock Sti but if you want to out run a M-5 you will need a little bigger turbo. I have gone 150 in my Sti more than once so it does go fast.

the STI has NO top end as far as Im concerned

This is no fault of the motor, it could make power out to 7K rpm, but Subaru decided to put a smaller turbo on our 2.5 than they EVER did on any of their 2.0 STIs(WTF??) so it runs out of power before 6K rpm,

get a turbo that can move air out to 7K and this motor is a REAL monster, theres a guy with a FP green putting down 420whp still using stock top mount, not bad

<ahem> 60-100?
my perception, which is mostly subjective- the STi is 2 different animals in terms of rpms. from 2500-4000 nice pull(and growl) from 4000 to 7000 it screams and sounds very typical to the WRC car you see/hear on speed channel and video games.

hopefully you are on a "controlled" area when you push the limits-
my verdict is this - for the money you can't go wrong - the STi is a rocketship beast with power in all rpm ranges-

I have a 2004 STI and am pulling better times than an M5 in real world driving at Infineon raceway. I do have the Vishnu turbo back exhaust, which still has a cat, and am pulling consistent 13.2's, M5's are rated at 13.0's but I haven't seen one run better than a 13.4. M5's are great cars, but for $80 g's, an STI will outperform that car with the right driving. Sure, if you got next to an M5 on a roll, he will probably walk, but with one more upgrade on an STI, you will have him sweating. Just go with good upgrades on the STI and you will have that M5 in your rear view mirror. The M5 is awesome, but the STI is a smaller, better handling car. No worries, go with the STI, get some good Vishnu upgrades, and you will never regret.
