Diagnosis Request: Tranny doesn't catch beyond 1st
So I was driving tonight, shifting into 5th from 6th off the freeway. the shift **** goes all the way vertical, doesn't catch and revs drop to idle. I hit the hazards and pull to the side. Fortunately I was close to home, and when i tried to get in gear the only gear I was able to get into was 1st. Slowly drove home and am extremely concerned.
Shift **** goes up and down freely without catching in any gear, what's the issue? Do I need a new tranny? New syncros? New ****? **** I don't knwo but I'm worried. Fortunately I have a motorcycle so I can still get around but I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

Your u-joint linkage (front part of shifter linkage) on your shifter may be in bad condition, or got spontaneously disconnected. Look around the area for clues of what could be loose, or wrong. I don't think your transmission can give out just like that, according to those symptoms. I highly believe it has something to do with/around the shifter assembly.

Makes sense, and I sure as hell am going to take a closer look myself before taking the car to a mechanic. Unfortunately this happened about 100 miles from my house and I work all the time so taking a look is much easier said than done

Well if you are efficient enough with your time, I say it would only take 15-20 mins max just to take a look. Finding the floor jack, then jacking up the car, and crawling under, taking a look at where the shifter linkage is. Take a couple of pictures (clear pictures, use flash if you have to) then get out and put it away. Post up the high res pictures for us to look at when you have time later after work.

^ I hardly doubt that, but that is easy to check and is INside the cabin, not under the car.
We are talking more about 35046, or around 35035 area. Give it a look and let us know.

So I got a chance to stop by the car and take a look under the shift boot. You were close, Pho Shizzle. The ball that fits in the cup (35035) at the bottom of the shift lever had popped out and was just sitting on the carpeting to the side of the cup. I was able to lift it and push it back in place in the cup and can probably drive it as long as I don't do any hard shifting. However, I'm not sure what's needed to get the ball to stay in place..I'm assuming some sort of gasket?
