07 STI - P0021 - A Camshaft Position System Performance (Bank 2)

P0021 INTAKE CAMSHAFT POSITION - TIMING OVER-ADVANCED - Bank 2

I just recently had a brand new long block put in the car and am currently in the break in stages. I've put about 350 miles on the car so far. At about 275 this P0021 bank 2 code popped up. I did some research and flushed the oil which was really clean. There were no metal shavings at all. It didn't come back on til about 330 miles. Today I took off the banjo bolt to see if they mistakenly placed a filter in there (they were removed in 07+ I believe) thinking it may have clogged it but I didn't see anything in there. I also reconnected the OCV sensor to see if it was loose and cleared code. If it pops up again, I'm going to clean out the ACVS lines and clean the OCV with brake clean. The car has no symptoms at all. It idles fine and drives well. No hesitation at all before or after the CEL. I'm getting ready to do another oil flush this weekend too. This was not an issue before replacing the engine so I'm kinda stumped. I may switch the OCV's bank 1 and bank 2 to see if the code switches from bank 2 to bank 1. Car pulls great in the higher rpms. There are also no mods on the car it's 100% stock. Also, timing seems to be right as there is no idle issues. Would you be able to notice if timing was off a tooth? Would the car run as well as it does?

I've searched high and low on IWSTI and Nasioc but non relating to mine. Most people have idle issues and hesitation but mine is running well.

What did you use when flushing your oil?

I don't really consider that a flush then. Subaru sells an oil additive that you put into the engine oil and you let it run for 20 minutes at idle then do a full oil change

Did you swap the filter at the same time you flushed the oil? If so i would take a close look at the cam sensor & the ocv's. I forget what the resistance should be at on the ocv's but i would check that.

I would assume you mean oil filter? Yes, I did. I am going to look at the ocv and clean it up if it comes on again. I'll check the resistance on the ocv as well.

Is it usually necessary for engines that are being broken in?

Its good to run an oil with high wear additives during the breakin process. My engine builder had me run Valvoline VR1 for 1,000 miles because of the high zinc levels in it.

Sometimes little metal particles get stuck into the pcv and cam position sensors so it's not a bad idea to run an oil flush additive after doing the break in.

Do you have the name of the Subaru flush you were talking about? I'll pick a bottle up to do before I change my oil this weekend.

Update: Ever since I reconnected the OCV electrical and rechecked the banjo bolt to see if there was a filter put in I've driven approximately 225 miles and it hasn't come on since, but I'm probably jinxing myself (knock on wood). I drove long distance commutes this weekend (long distance commute is when they both appeared. I think it has to do with the drive cycle or something). This upcoming weekend I'm doing another oil change and switching to Rotella T6. So far so good. I've also noticed a slight whine but only appears when on throttle. Maybe I just wasn't used to it for not having car for so long or could be belt. Car drives really well and all the power is there. After 1k I'll most likely be converting to E85. I'll keep updating this as most issue related threads never have the solutions posted.

Final Update: Car is coming up to 900 miles and the CEL has not come on again since 330. I've come to the conclusion it may have been low on oil with the addition of a wrong oil filter put on the car from when I got it back from the dealership. I've since changed the fluids and changed to the OEM Subaru filter. Also, cleaned up the banjo bolt and reconnected the OCV electrical.
